BALFOUR BEATTY TRADING UPDATE

#186713

Postby idpickering » December 14th, 2018, 7:06 am

Group performance for the year will be above previous expectations as a result of an additional Infrastructure Investments sale in December. The Group now forecasts that the 2018 Infrastructure Investments profit from disposals will be around £65 million.

The Group continues to drive fundamental transformation under the Build to Last programme, as evidenced by the fact that it expects to deliver on its key Phase Two targets, with all earnings based businesses successfully achieving industry standard margins for the second half of 2018.

Balfour Beatty continues to strengthen its balance sheet. In December, the Group paid down the remaining convertible bonds, delivering a 45% reduction in the gross debt over the last 12 months. The year end net cash is expected to be broadly in line with prior year, with 2018 average monthly net cash now forecast at £185 million, ahead of the previous £140 million to £170 million guidance range.

As expected, Group revenue in the second half of 2018 will be in line with the first half. Looking ahead, Balfour Beatty is selectively winning work in all its chosen markets, both on the right terms and at appropriate margins, which reflect the bidding discipline and risk management introduced under Build to Last. The forecast year end order book is around £12 billion, higher than the 2017 year end (£11.4 billion).

Profit will be increased mainly through selling assets, which is of course unsustainable in itself.

It is saying something also when they say 'which reflects the bidding discipline and risk management introduced under Build to Last'. That seems to be an admission they did not have any bidding discipline or risk management before. Now all shareholders need to judge is whether anything is likely to go wrong under these new contracts. At least they are paying down debt but it says something about BB and no doubt many others in the field are or were being run.

A nice nearly 4% rise in the share price on market opening. Not one for me though, the Carillion saga in the sector was enough for me thanks. Does anyone here hold BBY?

I do, I'm afraid. Perhaps I should get rid. Didn't you hold at one point?

P.S. I see from HL's website that 2 analysts are recommending it as a strong buy for what that is worth, which may be not very much.

I hold Balfour. It was one of Luni's favoured shares at one point. I am holding. As the release says they have improved margins and gotten rid of the worst contracts by focusing on geographical regions with better funding. IC have them as a tip for share of the year and I (for what it is worth) will be sitting tight for now and might buy more when the type of Brexit is finally revealed. Miner

Morning Bouleversee, a few years ago I very nearly bought into BBY, but never did so in the end. As for selling, as you have them already I should follow miner’s lead, and hold on.

OH has the ords in her portion of our HYP. They stopped the divi of course, but have now restarted.
I hold the Prefs, they have continued paying.

Yes, it was a Luni share. Well, all our bad ideas seemed good ideas when we bought them.

Largest shareholding outside of my HYP.

Worked for them off and on for 30 years so the accumulation of various share save schemes.

However, Kier would be my pick in the generally unloved construction sector.

Yes, we have it in my wife's ISA. Still showing a profit given attractive entry point, but not in our HYP so do not want to say any more.

Thank you for your input Terry. I can’t see me ever buying BBY to be honest, but ‘ever’ is a long time. ;)

Ian.
