IanTHughes HYP - MAY 2019 Top-ups

#220658

Postby IanTHughes » May 10th, 2019, 1:30 pm

Following on from my recent Annual Report:

viewtopic.php?f=15&t=16707

And my recent Top-Ups:

viewtopic.php?f=15&t=17313&p=216194#p216194

As a result of my adding more money to my HYP, together with the sale proceeds from my holding in KCOM PLC (KCOM) – due to impending takeover - as well as recently received dividends, the following top-ups were made today:

Date | EPIC | B/S | Concentration | Yield | Reason
10-May-19 | MARS | Buy | 1.57% | 7.48% | Top-Up
10-May-19 | IMB | Buy | 0.57% | 8.75% | Top-Up
10-May-19 | SLA | Buy | 0.95% | 8.07% | Top-Up
10-May-19 | NRR | Buy | 0.38% | 9.22% | Top-Up

Things may change between now and 10 June, but for now the following is the currently intended top-ups on that date:

Date | EPIC | B/S | Concentration | Yield | Reason
10-Jun-19 | IMB | Buy | 0.22% | 8.75% | Top-Up
10-Jun-19 | SLA | Buy | 0.48% | 8.07% | Top-Up

I suppose there's the hope that the share price will recover, but aren't all four examples of shares that are high yield because the price has collapsed?

Why would Ian care, provided the dividend keeps growing over the years?

I do hope not, I want to buy some more over the next few months!

What are you suggesting, only buying high yield shares directly after a price surge?

I own three of those four. The only one that I don't own is the one that hasn't fallen due to general market disdain for the sector that it is in.

On the whole, and subject to the usual caveats re: concentration etc, a pretty good bunch.

Thanks for that.

In point of fact only one - Imperial Brands (IMB) - has fallen over the last 3 months

Date | EPIC | Price | Date | EPIC | Price | Change
09-Feb-19 | MARS | 93.8000 | 09-May-19 | MARS | 99.5500 | 6.13%
09-Feb-19 | SLA | 244.4000 | 09-May-19 | SLA | 265.8000 | 8.76%
09-Feb-19 | NRR | 217.0000 | 09-May-19 | NRR | 233.5000 | 7.60%
09-Feb-19 | IMB | 2,537.5000 | 09-May-19 | IMB | 2,227.5000 | -12.22%

I would look at the 5 year graph. If it has a lower price now than five years ago, then the high yield is something of an illusion. An investor five years ago would have lost on capital value what he or she gained in high dividends.

Indeed. That's partly why they're a good bunch: they (and their sectors) may have bottomed out. But they're still well down on (say) 2016 levels.

Oh I see, why did you not say? Not simply waiting for a price surge, wait until a 5 year price high!

I see little point in buying stocks on the basis of their dividend yield if the past experience is that they just lose money for the investors. If there's "evidence" at least in the opinion of the market that the company or sector has turned round, then why not consider buying?

Oh, so not just five years, you mean only ever buy at an all-time market high. Have you ever tried Value Investing?
