Is that a light bulb moment?

In any event anyone who believes the numbers in Reports and Accounts is living in a fantasy world. How many accounting scandals do we get every year? And how many happen that are either hushed up or never discovered.

There is only one number you can rely on in the accounts and that is the dividend because you get physical confirmation.

Well, that particular light bulb lit years ago. I'm sanguine about these occasional errors and as regards company accounts, I've always written here about how they give great scope for obfuscation - that's before you think about downright dodgy or illegal accounting.

Thanks for keeping us up to date with this HYPs construction. I intend topping up my WPP holdings soon, and have all of te above save for LAND.

Keep up the good work, keeping us informed,

Ian.

I too hold them all save LAND and second Ian's thanks to Ian for the updates though I've found the link and I'm reading stockopeadia now.

On the specific share picks I'd probably pass on a couple of them for reasons I've expressed elsewhere on this site, VOD cover and SLA history in the current incarnation, BHP and AV dividend history but I have a mature HYP and plenty of shares to add to. Perhaps, if like Stephen I was crating a new HYP from scratch and hence had to find 15 or more picks I might have to relax some of my scruples to make a full portfolio so perhaps they would make it in.

I hold all apart from ITV, BLND, LAND and WPP, although all would be on my list.

I agree with you about SLA, might as well wait until the new set-up reports, at least once is my thinking. I am however ok with VOD, thanks to the Free Cash Flow figures, and, assuming no significant changes, another purchase will complete on the 10 April, which will bring the holding concentration by value up to about 4.85%. Probably enough for the foreseeable but in any case we shall know more on the 14 May when the finals are published. BHP I hold and it is one of my larger holdings, but otherwise it is not off-limits for a top-up.

I do disagree with you about Aviva which has had 5 consecutive dividend increases. Are you still sore about 6 to 7 years ago? :) Well each to their own.

Anyway, thanks for your input

Stephen Bland in his Stockopedia prolie wrote:I’m Stephen Bland and have been investing in shares, following markets and advising others on this for around 47 years, with a particular interest in value and high yield approaches. My professional background is that I qualified in 1971 as a chartered accountant and after a short time set up my own practice, running it successfully for several decades and retiring from it in the early noughties. More recently I have qualified as a Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment. For many years until 2013 I wrote about my value and high yield share investing methods for the Motley Fool UK website. In 2008 I decided to start my own equity income tipsheet, The Dividend Letter, which has since grown its circulation strongly It follows my own high yield portfolio strategy that I had developed earlier, the novel attraction being the exclusive focus on dividend income and giving up on the whole idea of trading for gains.

My bold.

As the current financial year with its forecast dividend of 16.3p is almost over, the yield is calculated from a forecast dividend for the Year Ending 30 April 2020 of 17.8p.

Sharecast (ex Digital Look) is showing a Forecast Dividend (end April 2020) of 17.71p, which at a current price of 348.10p gives a Forecast Yield of 17.71 / 348.1 = 5.09%, so almost bang on the 5.1% in Ian's table.

And, as often happens, sharecast is showing 5.3% so it hasn't updated it to take into account the values on its own site :!:

The yield was a little sub-par, but I decided to go ahead as being the best available choice for me. My forecast income has increased, but the average yield has dropped.

Not a share that I follow. Does anyone know what triggered the price fall? I agree that it looks interesting.

A rights issue to fund a take over was the reason

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/uk.mobil ... KKBN1JF0LX

I added them a few months ago once the yield became attractive

Other factors pulling the price back have been problems at or worries expressed by Mondo and Smurfit. Shortage of pulp was another one, but as SMDS are big in paper and board recycling, they have much of the supply under their own control.

I am always comforted when I see the company name on the back of a rugby club shirt.
