I wonder if Morgan Sindall might be a better bet than Carillion. They went through a disappointing period a couple of years ago but (unnoticed by me) they have recovered a lot and are now up well over 80% on what I paid 7 years ago. The dividend stagnated for a few years but is also now on the up and a big rise promised this year. Final results out today:

I should have read the alert first thing this morning as they have already risen by about 10% today. The report is very positive but that doesn't necessarily mean anything, of course. Anyway, I have done a smallish top up and may buy more if they come back. They are still a long way off the high even further back before I got involved. It could suggest that CLLN might also spring a nice surprise. Wouldn't it be nice to see those shorters caught out?

I'm wary of these small companies after IRV!
MGNS were up 10% to a 5 year high after reporting and a directorate change. I know that if I were to invest they would head south quickly.

I wish you hadn't reminded me. Will I never learn? I really must start buying investment trusts, though I had 2 of those go bust on me as well.

P.S. to previous: Just to illustrate how ga-ga I'm getting, I forgotto check how well the proposed dividend is covered and I'm not even sure I know how to. Did either of you do that in the case of the increased div. on the cards at MGNS?

http://uk.advfn.com/p.php?pid=financial ... LSE%3AMGNS

indicates the current div cover is 2.39. (earnings per share / dividend).

Div cover at IRV was 1.95....(2.95 previous year) Mmm! Small companies are OK until they're not ok then they get hammered.

Then we have HSBC posting a massive 62% profit decrease and the SP goes down 6%.

Where to invest....Safely..????

Disclosure..No holding in mgns but I still hold Irv ( someone's got to keep them!)

Thanks, Monabri. That's pretty good. Hopefully, MGNS will not bite off more than it can chew, which seems to be the case with IRV, where I too am losing a packet. Fingers crossed.
