"Royal Dutch Shell Chief Executive Officer Ben van Beurden commented: “The first quarter 2017 was a strong quarter for Shell. Cash flow from operating activities of $9.5 billion and free cash flow of $5.2 billion enabled us to reduce debt, and cover our cash dividend for the third consecutive quarter. We saw notable improvements in Upstream and Chemicals, which benefited from improved operational performance and better market conditions. Our operations in Qatar are restarting during the second quarter.
We continue to reshape Shell’s portfolio and to transform the company with over $20 billion divestments completed or announced that will strengthen the balance sheet as they are completed.
The strategy we have outlined to deliver a world-class investment case is taking shape. Following the successful integration of BG, we are rapidly transforming Shell through the consistent and disciplined execution of our strategy. This includes investing around $25 billion this year and the delivery of new projects, which we expect to generate $10 billion in cash flow from operating activities by 2018."

Re: shell results and dividend
Thanks for the report from Shell. Although not unexpected it is a relief and quite encouraging to see these results for the first quarter. I always felt that they had the financial and will power to at least maintain their dividend and it looks as if that is the case.

Worth noting that for Q1 last year, the exchange rate was 1.425. It is now 1.29, so barring any sudden movements, we can hope for a sterling increase of about 10%.

There is still a small problem:
https://www.digitallook.com/news/news-and-announcements/shell-keeps-first-quarter-dividend-steady--2653609.html
It would have been good if the earnings were higher than the dividends, rather than just the cash flow improving due to asset sales.

Earnings per share came in at 43 US cents, versus 7 cents one year ago.
The quarterly dividend on both the A and B class shares was maintained at 47 US cents.

You're welcome Dod. Shell, (RDSB), are my largest holding in my HYP by some way, and I'm very much of the 'never sell Shell' mind.
Regards,
Ian.

Re: shell results and dividend
There was quite a lot of discussion on Bloomberg this morning, about the increase in oil production in the US putting (downward) pressure on oil prices and OPEC producers. There are several video interviews if you scroll down the link. These quotes are extracts from more than one article:
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... -11th-week
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... -11th-week
While a global glut has pushed crude prices down to five-month lows, manufacturers of middle distillates can’t make enough to satisfy demand. A combination of seasonal events is giving refiners on both the Atlantic and Gulf coasts a chance to boost exports to Europe and South America.
“Everybody is freaking out about high refinery rates” in the U.S., said Robert Campbell, head of oil products research for Energy Aspects in New York, as plants in the U.S. processed record levels of crude into refined products last month. Domestic demand for gasoline may be slipping in the U.S., but there’s no reason to panic when it comes to distillate.
Crude tumbled to a six-month low, erasing gains sparked by OPEC’s November output agreement, as concerns over a supply glut mounted. U.S. stocks fluctuated, while Treasuries slid with the dollar.
U.S. crude output rose by 28,000 barrels a day last week for the longest run of gains since 2012, according to Energy Information Administration data.

We're just petrolheads
Just glad that they can maintain the dividend for now. Take each quarter as it comes.
