The question of benchmarking has cropped up on a number of threads. It's possibly timely to remind you that the Total Returns versions of the various ftse indices are available (if you know where to look) on the FT Market data site. JohnnyCyclops (as yet, not a 'Lemon') produced this invaluable guide to finding them (as well as their yield and p/e histories)...

Worth mentioning though that although his links still function, FT have changed the pages concerned and so his instructions for using the charts are no longer quite correct: the "Interactive chart" link no longer exists, but you get the equivalent by clicking the "Charts" tab - somewhat non-obviously, as you already have a chart displayed below it when you enter the page, but clicking the tab gives you a chart with more options.
Also, the "Historical prices" tab can be worth exploring properly - if you have sufficient patience!

Yes. FT have done a good job on their redesigned site in making sure that links in the old format still open the relevant pages. The way to create a link to a custom chart has changed quite a bit too. Getting a link to include comparators is a bit different now, but can still be done. On the Charts page create your custom time period, then click the Çomparisons tab and type the comparison you want in the ''Add a company or index' box. Now you can click the 'share' button to copy the link. Here's the ftse100 1-year chart with UKX.T (ftse100 TR) as a comparison.

Note that the FT have now modified their links to use the hex values in place of 'problem' characters ( { and } ) that can break posted links, both here and in 'the óld place'.
