Yes it is an April 1st joke.
But there is a glimmer of truth in the concept, both N-S links (Desertec) and E-W links. It is something I am looking into slowly along with freight rail, and linked with.

Buckminster Fuller wrote about a global electricity connector many years ago (Critical Path), I re-read it recently and he was a very farsighted and interesting individual.
