From an investor perspective we prefer the shareprice to be as low as possible when they do the buybacks. See also

For me, from a tax perspective, I personally prefer share buybacks at present vs dividends. More generally buybacks vs dividends is really a philosophical approach to tax problem, i.e. politics.
My main take on this is that they are doing what they committed to do when they did the BG deal. Furthermore they are showing capital discipline despite higher oil prices. Both are a good thing imho, most especially in this industry.
