Can oil & mining companies be ESG investments?
Mining and oil companies present some of the toughest challenges for ESG investors. With climate change top of the agenda after the UN Climate Action Summit in New York in September, companies that are actively contributing to greenhouse gas emissions are on the back foot.

Firms such as Exxon Mobil and BHP, some of the largest in the world by market capitalisation, may be spending heavily to promote the idea that they are moving towards a sustainable future, but they are struggling to convince a sceptical public.

Among the under 44 age bracket, ESG investing has taken hold in the last three years, so expect a lot more fund flows to perceived ESG investments as this is a social and global trend so will continue for a whole generation of investors.

Whether people will get a return is another thing. Noting the dot com bubble of 2000 and the firms that actually made money in dotcom 2.0 eventually were far fewer.

Just like in 1999/2000 when every board mentioned the internet or new website, every company now will feel they have to dress itself in the environmental responsibility fashion of the day and call themselves ESG and undertake associated activities.
