Voluntary NIC conts

#212699

Postby rivershiven » April 4th, 2019, 3:21 pm

Following much reading on here & after speaking to HMRC I made a voluntary NIC cont for 2016/17 by cheque. The cheque was cashed & I have since received a receipt. Can anyone, who has made voluntary conts themselves, please give me a rough idea how long it takes for HMRC to update your online record?

I intend making further voluntary conts but wanted to test the system before handing over additional money & there is no rush to do so anyway.

Thanks

RS

I too have made voluntary NICs and the official position is that it takes up to 10 weeks for them to be credited.

Similar position - Sent them a cheque early Feb, which they were quick to cash (!), got a receipt but still not credited when checking on-line. On the YOU.GOV website there is an option to check progress. For me the other day it said estimated completion 22 March but also said not complete yet!

Prepared to wait on a little while longer before contacting them.

In any timescales, factor in the Brexit effect where all non-essential govt agency/civil service staff seem to have been reassigned to Brexit duties. That may be a hunch on my part, but it's taking months not days to get any sort of information out of NS&I.

Google you.gov hmrc and then you take the first item to log in.

Ah, GOV.UK, not you.gov. I usually go in directly to the State Pension summary. Funny, I hadn't noticed the Check progress menu item before, maybe it's new since last year.

Anyway, I posted mine in on 25 Feb and it's in their system as received on 7-Mar (which is also the date of the receipt they sent me; they cashed it on the 12th), but it hasn't progress to Work started yet and says Expect a response by 21 Apr 2019. A couple of months is about par, from previous years' experience...

I made 2 class 3 NI contributions for tax year 18/19, one for myself and one for the wife ( July 18). Both cheques were cashed. A few weeks later I checked both NI contributions online and they had been credited and the predicted state pension had increased. Then about 2 months ago I checked again...one payment/contribution had disappeared and the state pension fcast had reduced. I contacted HMRC to inquire as to what had happened to the payment. The man at HMRC was quite bolshy and insisted that you couldn't make a class 3 contribution within the current tax year for the current tax year. His level of bolshiness was such that I had to rise to the bait :) - I asked him why had they accepted the cheques then? Why did they write to me and the wife (separately)to acknowledge receipt of payment for the tax year? Why was my wifes payment still showing ( tax year paid) on their website yet mine wasn't? After putting me on hold for 5 mins or so, he came back and said they would open an investigation which would take 10 weeks. No apologies but he did sound quite sheepish!
