Proving ownership of property

#209807

Postby Sunnypad » March 24th, 2019, 2:31 pm

hi there

As some of you lovely Fools will know, my dad died, leaving total chaos, and it turns out my mum owns a couple of flats that she knows nothing about.

can't find any paperwork either, so we don't know the length of the lease, or have any deeds. The mortgage was paid off a while ago.

I'm finding conflicting advice online about what documents we will need before we sell these properties so I thought I'd ask on here.

the properties are houses converted into flats.

Many thanks.

The Title may well have been dematerialised *** and, assuming the property or land is registered, you should be able to find them here (if not registered you'll find out when you search):

Get information about property and land

Search the register

https://www.gov.uk/get-information-abou ... e-register

Get a copy of the deeds

https://www.gov.uk/get-information-abou ... s-of-deeds

The deeds could be made up of several documents. Each document costs £7.

You may wish also to purchase the Title Plan.

As for the tenancies, do not the agents hold the detail?

*** Clitheroekid goes into further detail on this aspect as part of this thread here:

Do the flats consist of the whole of the houses? If so is it possible that the freehold is also owned?

But, even if not, surely the land registry would be the first place to start, to find the freeholder?

thank you

that's the link I used and nothing comes up.

they are definitely leasehold - we have information about the tenancies but need the other stuff. I will have a look through CK's information as well, thanks all.
