Hi,
My sister owns a house. Next door is a big open area owned by a sports club. There is a small section of unclaimed land, measuring about a metre wide by a few metres in length, between them which the previous owner of her property looked after for years.
When she bought the house the solicitor made an application to claim ownership of it? something called Adverse Possession? But nothing ever came of it. The solicitor isn't responding to her. a) any idea where this application would be made to? the local council, land registery etc? b) how can we go about finding the owner?
ideally she wants to purchase this land, become the legal owner and erect a fence as people are currently using this small space / gap as a short cut to the sports club.
Thanks

Re: How to find owner of small piece of land
About ten years ago I applied to the Land Registry to find out who owned a small rectangle of grass on the other side of our boundary. I think I paid a nominal fee of 2 or 3 pounds.

Erect a nice high fence around it and proceed to use it as if it were your own, and the real owner will probably surface and object.
This is as I understand it, the basis of adverse possession. If no-one pops up telling you to vacate their land for a period (I've seen 12 years written) then it becomes yours and you can apply to the LR to become registered as the proprietor. There is probably more about this on the LR site.
Bear in mind this is all barack room hearsay and I am not a lawyer, but there is probably a grain of truth within.

It looks like the "Map Search" on the above may be what you want.

Title plans only show general boundaries and will be unlikely to resolve the ownership of a few square metres.
Neighbours close to me spent approaching £20,000 in legal fees over a similar parcel between their two terraced houses.

Hi
Thanks for the advice. An application has been lodged with land registry, but apparently its going to take them over a year to decide.
