so what happens if you don't pay? does your rubbish just pile up on the street ?

Same as what happens here if you do not pay your utility bill. That entity comes after you for damages.

Myself and my wife both attend an excellent NHS dentist (in Central Scotland). Covid has involved extra precautions. For inspections, the dentist and assistant wear their normal gear, with the addition of masks. But before they commence any work with the high speed drill, they go off and put on a more complex mask, and over-gowns which I assume are only worn once per patient. Despite the extra precautions, and the backlog from the Covid lockdowns, In early summer they still gave me a prompt appointment for a broken tooth - and a temporary treatment was carried out, although I had wait a bit longer than usual for a permanent fix. The practice also carries out private dentistry - but there is no pressure to choose it, and at 77 I'm not looking for cosmetic improvements :) . I'm not aware of problems obtaining NHS dentistry in our area - there is even one in our local ASDA which is advertising for NHS patients.

Obviously Scotland has a more socialist outlook on many things so your experience is more probable than in England.

But going private is not just a matter of getting faster treatment, although that is certainly one factor. Rather it is about the fact that the more advanced and expensive treatments are not available on the NHS. I question why anyone would put "cheap" above "good" when it comes to their health?

Free in the way you get your bins emptied for free? That you can drive your car on the road for free?

Scott.

Sorry but you are trying to be too clever. I earlier said (or added) at the point of delivery. I know perfectly well that it is paid out of general taxation.
