To me all I could taste was bananas...I don't like my beer to taste of bananas.

I won't be having that again.

It's a wheat beer isn't it? Banana probably comes from the yeast used, perhaps they use a German hefeweizen yeast of some sort which gives banana (and clove and bubblegum) flavours. Belgian style wheat beers don't really have banana flavours. And fennel is there obviously to match Rick's fish dishes.

Chalky sadly passed away years ago, what a character he was!

Not a wheat beer, described as an English strong ale. Has a mix of Sharps normal yeast with some Belgian stuff.

John

Yes, has some, a touch, wheat malt in it but not enough to make it a wheat beer. I don't like spices in my beer. I think I had this once in the late 00's.

I'm very boring, a few bottles of Ilkley New World pale ale and a couple of salisbury steaks made from Morrisons's butchers mince in Consett. Best mince I've had since I was a regular customer of Greggs? butchershop in Ashtead. There I would ask for a sirloin steak. You get one. Ask for braising steak (sounds a bit like Basingstoke?) and the sirloin steak would be chopped to pieces. Ask for mince and the braising steak would be minced before your eyes. £7 a kilo in 2005 and before. This Morrison's excellent mince is about £8 a kilo. I love it. I buy it for most weekends.

I'll have a Proper Job next.

Other than the odd cup of tea and a few bottles of water, I've just spent two weeks exclusively drinking Lion Beer (4.8%) - a great thirst quencher and just what was needed!

OK, there's half a metre of snow outside, I will have to get a bus on Friday to get some food and beer. OK. I can't finish the beading because I can't drive to get panel pins. OK, my brother will try to drive up on Monday. My real worry is next week the pubs won't have any beer due to the weather and failed deliveries. What a nightmare that would be (can't be bovvered to cross-post this in Odd Dreams).

94.5kg and dropping.

I was in possibly the grandest British Legion ever, looked like a 17th Century Manor house, proper half timbered and beams and big fireplace and all that. Had a pint of Flack Catcher, that is the correct spelling, would having a pint called "flak" in a British Legion be in poor taste? Talking of poor taste, this wasn't, it was very good indeed. Sadly driving so had to stop at one. Flack Manor Brewery. And a mere £3 a pint.

Ah, sunny Romsey is where they're at. Used to drink a bit round there when a mate was based at IBM Hursley, but don't recall any local brews other than Flowerpots(?)

Flowerpots are still going strong at Cheriton and of course we now have my favourite Red Cat in Winchester.

Most weeks in my local I will imbibe several pints of one or the other.

Black Sheep Ale. Only bread left in the co-op was naan bread, I then rushed to grab the last chicken breasts as I always keep curry paste and coconut cream in the larder. I will survive to see another day.

I have bread and beer in stock...I could last another few days but the thaw is coming at the weekend here.

This weather could drive a man to drink. Unfortunately I'm having a planned fortnight* off the booze for weight/work reasons (got a busy week ahead, and some winter lard to shift) Sadly the planned 4 miles+ walking isn't happening

*well.... 0100 Sun 25 Feb - 1700 Fri 9 March.. almost a fortnight

Had a mate who worked in Winchester for a couple of years. He was a regular drinker of Cheriton ales. He'd be delighted to hear they are still doing well.

The locals would only ever ask for a "Pots"

It was during a visit to Edinburgh that I discovered the glorious Innis and Gunn original Oak aged beer. My daughter and her friends took us on a tour of several of their local pubs, I'm not sure how many as it all got a bit vague.
Back home in Dorset I was wandering around our local ( 4 mile walk ) Waitrose and was delighted to see it on offer at £2.50. That is for a 660ml bottle and it's 6.6% which makes it a devilishly good bargain :-)

Bloody hell! Just had two pints in a Sam Smiths pub, Tadcaster bitter, toffeeish, chocolatey, at £2 a pop! And their stout was very nice too...real coal ie no gas-fired fireplaces but the real stuff, the place was boiling, the carpet was tartan, toilets were clean, and the chap tending the whole operation was really on the ball...sans some teeth in the mouth...but even the toilet was heated up like a sauna.

Back in the aforementioned fancy British Legion, choice was Doombar or Hop Back's Summer Lightning, well that's easy then. The latter was pretty darn good I'd say. Light, bright, that bitter hopping tang, but not too much. Fire was burning away merrily, £3 a pint. There was nothing not to like. Apart from having to stick to one as I was driving.

Never tried Purity's Mad Goose before but, after the positive comments in this thread, bought a few from the local Tesco that had just started stocking it.
Excellent stuff, a cross in bitterness and weight between Oakham's Citra and Green Devil (but no Citra hop taste). The balance between bitterness, weight, acidity and aroma is just about perfect for me.

Oddly enough... Just drinking a Mad Goose. From Tesco I think. Not sure if local Sainsburys stock it

I have never seen it at Sainsburys but Morrisons has it.

Perhaps I haven't seen it because Sainsburys doesn't have any beer deals, 180p and above a bottle of almost any ale.

My local Tesco currently has Mad Goose on the 4 for £6 offer. How could I refuse?
