London pub recommendations

Me and Mrs ISC are off to London this weekend and if possible I'd like to try a few new pubs.

We will be near Tate Britain, Tate Modern/Southwark and may well have a walk around Hampstead if the weather is fit.

We love tradditional London boozers with decent ale, so any tips would be very gratefully received.

The George in Southwark is a nice building, no idea what the beer is like these days.
(Seems to be Greene King so probably dull)

If you are in that neck of the woods then Borough Market is definitely worth a visit and here are a few pubs around it.

If you're near Soho I can recommend the Duke of Argyll in Brewer Street. Newly refurbed with lovely wood panelling to the original 19th century plans with a few snugs that open onto the bar downstairs, and an upstairs (where they serve good food) that is like sitting in a Gentlemans Club, complete with comfy chairs and sofas. It's a Sam Smiths pub so beer is a bit mixed but OK. Lovely atmosphere when I was there escaping from the snow a couple of weekends ago.

All the best, Si

And very near Market Porter is The Rake, new owners but they did sort out their cask ale issues very quickly.

Re: Hampstead. In a central location there I suggest The Holly Bush www.hollybushhampstead.co.uk historic, Fullers pub, very well rated, very convenient location whilst wondering around central Hampstead. A short stroll away you might also consider popping into the Flask, another trad/highly regarded pub owned by Youngs https://www.theflaskhampstead.co.uk/

I’ve just had a quick Good Friday pint in The Holly Bush, as you do. Both the dog and I are extremely wet. Hopefully the OP will check the weather forecast or go well prepared. ;)

Edit: Not all I wrote may be true. It may have been on my wish list.

Sounds like you've spent a long lunch in both pubs, maybe that's the bit that's 'untrue' ;)

... Ooh better go, free beer!
