Well, from my experience, for me it does! But then popular science like this is deeply flawed anyway - good for a few headlines and getting the authors names into the public domain, but bog all else.

From my student days in Berlin:

"Bier auf Wein, lass das sein
Wein auf Bier, rat' ich dir"

Loosely translates as:

"Wine then beer, head feels queer
Beer then wine, head feels fine"

Considering how much of both the Germans consume (and the much-vaunted purity of their beer), I'd say they're right. But for me, the strong flavour of a beer is enough to skew the experience of a decent wine afterwards. There's no pleasing some folk.

The trouble is this silly experiment, apart from being based on a shockingly small sample of people, used fixed amounts of beer and wine, and so completely missed the point. The main problem I have found is when I have a single glass of wine with a meal then go out with mates and have 4 or 5 pints of beer. That doesn't seem an unlikely scenario for many people. Over the years, I have done this many more times than they would ever bother to test in a stupid piece of cod science like this, and I have no doubt that one glass of wine makes any hangover far worse.

I think starting with wine makes one less likely to control the subsequent beer intake...

They were drinking lager, enough to make anyone feel strange! Invalid experiment

They miss a key point is that the lower the concentration of alcohol in the drink (mainly water) the lower the proportion of alcohol that is removed from the bloodstream via the liver. We can to some extent ignore that which disappears through sweat and breath or that remains in the intestines. However, some goes via the kidneys and some via the liver. The more liquid the more alcohol goes out of the body via the kidneys. Which is why a session beer is often a good thing. Which is also why drinking quite a bit of water (a pint or two) after alcohol reduces the pressure on the liver.

Yes, but that's the only one that matters to me :-)

I think we all know that the ability to handle drink varies greatly from person to person and depends on physiology, so a sample of 90 is stupid quite frankly.

Back in my early 20s dinner dances were quite common and were usually a pint on arrival, 2 or 3 glasses of wine with the meal, a liqueur during the speeches and then beer again during the dancing - NB I wasn't driving.

This rarely led to a hangover, though I would always drink at least a pint of water before bed.

But seeing the "study" on the news at lunchtime, to say they were using 2.5 pints of lager and 3 glasses of wine is wrong, that was more like 2.5 pints of lager and 2.5 bottles of wine!

Given that it's not a literal translation, one wonders whether the English or German* came first, with the other altered somewhat to make a rhyme.

* or neither, of course.

OK, fair question, and I confess. My translation (the German is correct), my clunky rendition with the words reversed to make the clunky rhyme work.

Sort of wish I hadn't bothered really.

Lol. The English version in the article pointed to by the OP works a little better I think.

At one stage I was thinking of doing a research project as to the impact of different concentrations of alcohol, but at the moment I am trying to improve my sleep so have stopped drinking alcohol so that will have to wait. However, my experience is that finishing off with something to wash at least some alcohol out of my systems is a good idea.

In rummaging around on the net for such ryhmes I found this list:
https://www.buzzfeed.com/hannahjewell/m ... ur-lamp-on

Which includes the common one:
Beer before liquor, never been sicker.
Liquor then beer, have no fear.

That, of course, fits with what I would expect although one would assume beer after wine would minimise the alcohol for the liver to deal with although all of these things depend primarily on the total quantity of alcohol being consumed.

My German teacher used to recite another version that went:
Bier vor wein, wacht mann fein (wakes up feeling fine)
Wein vor bier, ........

But I can never remember the last bit - perhaps I had too much wine before beer.
