Sherry

#258052

Postby Rhyd6 » October 15th, 2019, 3:30 pm

Long shot but my favourite sherry is a very dry "La Ina" which seems to have disappeared from UK supermarkets and other nearby outlets. I can buy it from some London based suppliers but the shipping costs etc. are high. Can anyone recommend a similar sherry which is available in supermarkets, Majestic etc. please. I know I could start to work my way through the various offerings but I do have some respect for my liver

Sorry can't help - but it sounds good! If you do find a supermarket/national merchant that sells it then please post as it looks like a label I would love to try.

The "big" Fino sherry, is of course, Tio Pepe by Gonzalez Byass which should be available from UK supermarkets. If it's a bit too mainstream for your tastes, then the "En Rama" releases are meant to be very good: https://www.majestic.co.uk/wines/tio-pe ... rama-24206

I don't "do" Fino so can't give any personal recommendations.

All the best, Si

It used to be by Domecq, but I think they went bust or something? (They certainly sold off all the sherry brands in a big hurry, anyway.) Now owned by Lustau, and very well recommended. As you've probably figured, Vinissima will sell it to you for just £5.88 a bottle, but a fairly fixed UK delivery charge of £16 to £20 (for any number) means that you'd need to be ordering half a dozen bottles to really make it worth the candle. Right now, I'd probably be tempted. I mean, just think how much more it'll cost after 31st October. ;)

The Whisky Exchange also has La Ina for a much more expensive £14.25 (https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/p/120 ... ino-sherry), but at £4.95 for delivery (any number of bottles). You do the maths. My head hurts. Sherry always does that to me.

ALLD was one of the first buys in my ISA in July 1999, but a few weeks later, in September, they disposed of their pubs to Punch Newco and I got some money back. Out of Punch Newco came a few shares in Bass in October. There was a special dividend after the disposal of the pubs, and then they stopped paying them. I got out in July 2000. Then in 2005 they were taken over by Pernod Ricard. Bass demerged in 2003 into Intercontinental Hotels (IHG) and Mitchells & Butlers (MAB). Apart from IHG, not a lot of return from all that.

Those finos and manzanillas used to be great drinks. There used to be a bar in Cambridge, opposite Trinity, which had a great line in sherries.

I's suggest going down to Gordom's Wine Bar, Villiers street off Strand in London.
https://gordonswinebar.com/
... and checking out their wine-list of fortified wines. Only place I've been where they 'pull' beakers of sherry/madeira from the barrel.
I learned a lot about sherry in that place, plus, that on balance I then 30 years ago and now tend to prefer madeira wine :)

Scrumpyjack, may Baccus smile down upon you. I didn't even think about the Wine Soc. and OH is a member :o I've ordered a case so soon shall be a very happy bunny.
Sobraon, if you like very dry sherry then this is definitely the one for you.
The only pub/restaurant I've come across it was in The Dun Cow, Salthouse, Norfolk. We had several meals there and to find La Ina was a bonus.
Around this area the only time you'll find sherry in a pub is at Christmas/New Year and then it'll be Bristol Cream Sherry or horror of horrors British sherry!!!
