Sloe Gin - what do I mix with this?

#104782

Postby OLTB » December 17th, 2017, 6:31 pm

Evening all - Mrs OLTB has won a bottle of sloe gin and it’s the first time either of us have had any. Can you mix it with tonic as normal (we have bottles of Fever Tree chilling in the fridge) or is there anything better?

Cheers, OLTB.

Best to drink it like a port or sweet sherry. A homemade recipe would have e.g. 400g sloes, 400g sugar in a 1L bottle and fill up with (around 70cl gin) and leave for a few months before decanting off the liquor.

Nooo - as above, sloe gin is a liqueur not a spirit. The best use of it is drinking a nip of it neat to warm you up when you're out and about in cold weather (although the even better thing for that is bullshot - essentially bloody mary with the tomato juice replaced with hot consommé. Alcoholic meaty goodness, what more do you need?)

You can also use sloe gin for a version of kir royale - we often have it at Christmas, about half an inch of sloe gin in the bottom of a flute and top up with fizz.

Thanks both - that’s good to know and Christmas Day with a bit of fizz sounds just the ticket.

Cheers, OLTB.

I've just decanted some 5 year old sloe gin. I use gallon whisky bottles to make it and always decant one of them this time of the year to use as Christmas presents. It makes a nice long drink with lemonade though we tend to use this more in the summer and as already mentioned can add a certain zing to prosecco or other sparkling wine. I've also added a drop to a dull white wine to liven it up a bit. I usually carry a flask of it in my handbag in this cold and damp weather. A small nip now and then is really useful for keeping the cold out ;)

I am seriously impressed! I have never bought whisky in bottles bigger than 1L (1 quart). The idea of 8 pint bottles of whisky being emptied (presumably into willing people) fills me with awe.

On the subject of sloe gin, The supermarket stuff has got quite weak. Some no stronger than a strong wine, though as said it should be at least port strength. As the last post implied it should be warming, though the Gordens at 26% that I have is sadly not so.

I do recommend that the OP try sipping some from a shot or sherry glass (or egg cup) before trying to dilute it like ribena.

Hi Urbandreamer, I'm afraid that it wasn't me or OH that emptied the gallon whisky bottles, my friends used to tun our local pub and they supplied the bottles in exchange for a full (70cl) bottle of sloe gin. I can't get whisky past my nose and I don't like gin either, however once I've added sloes, damsons, cherries, raspberries, elderberries or blackberries I find it most palatable :)

Well, I'm stunned!

Rhyl6 may be reusing empties from the local pub, but my local supermarket (Morrisons) is currently selling 4.5 L (1 gallon) bottles of Famouse Grouse whiskey for £65.

It would seem that I'm something of a lightweight.

I've only ever drunk slow gin as a straight sipping drink - lovely.
If your bottle of sloe gin still has the sloes in it [undecanted], keep the sloes and refill the bottle with discount shop sherry => sloe sherry. Like the sloe-gin process, leave for a couple of months and decant. Very very good in it's own right, simple to make, cheap as chips, fortified by the gin in the berries; like a turbo-sherry

As far as commercial sloe gins are concerned, I always bought Hawkers if I could find it (it seemed to go out of distribution for a bit).
It was far better than the usual 'cooking' sloe gins; perhaps a little sweet for some but with a lovely complex taste and nose.
Has anyone tried it recently?
