Re: Anyone for Italian Beer?
Couple more points about Weizenbier ...
Ref pouring instructions: it tends naturally to come out all head (think stout, though the comparison ends there). I pour 70% of the bottle carefully down the side of the glass before swilling it for the yeast and deliberate head.
Oh, and it's often served with a slice of lemon. I'm happy with or without.

Intriguingly, Nigeria is the largest market for Guinness - especially for their stronger (over 7% ABV) Foreign Extra. For me, the latter goes well with heavy strong cheeses such as Stilton.
Apparently Tesco have Guinness Antwerpen at the moment, which is a rebranded version of the Special Export Stout (8%) destined for Belgium. Supposedly it's one up on FES. Diageo definitely seem to have been one of the winners of Tesco's recent conversion to more interesting beer, at the same time as ditching a lot of the me-too Heineken lager brands.
On rating sites - I like-hate Untappd. It seems to have become the main one that British breweries look too - it has a Twitter-like limit on the review lengths which isn't ideal for detailed tasting notes, but does make it more sociably acceptable to be reviewing in company as you don't spend your entire pint poring over your phone. I tend to the view that short reviews of almost everything one drinks are better than detailed ones of just the beers you drink at home.

Or pouring your pint over your phone, as I've done.
I've avoided Untappd as several of my beery mates are on it so I see the Facebook updates. It seems to be (sometimes) a competition for 'beer twitchers' - who can get the most ticks for rare/obscure beers.
I'm much more the 'consumer ' type, although I like trying new stuff occasionally. On which note, I'm off to Reading Beer Fest in a few hours. Wish me luck. 500+ real ales : even if I drink thirds it's going to be challenging.

Re: Anyone for Italian Beer?
Franziskaner is a true classic
You don't want it fridge cold though IMO - a dark garage is usually about right for me. If I drink in the winter it usually be after some heavy exercise as it's a great thirst quencher. Agreed though it's best drunk in the garden on a hot day!
I've had the odd decent Italian beer at a Festival.

A true classic indeed, but we shouldn't forget Paulaner or Maisel's, both of which are available on a widespread basis. My local always has one on tap. I never however have it with a slice of fruit added.
Re rating sites, Ratebeer is by far the best IMHO and easily used discretely on your phone in the pub. It gives Fransikaner 93 out of 100 BTW.

Paulaner is average in comparison IMO. Maisel's I've not had. Will check it out. Andech's is great.

Found a problem. You can buy 3 Franziskaner's for a £5. Maisel is £2.59 a bottle at Beer Hawk.

I can give you a greater problem - Weihenstephaner, arguably the greatest of all the German wheats, is on special at Waitrose for the next fortnight, at £1.51 (along with the Dunkel at £2.19). Sainsbury also have the standard one at £1.80. Just running some of the big names through mysupermarket.co.uk I found
Franziskaner 3 for £5 at Asda/Ocado, also £1.80 Waitrose/Tesco
Erdinger Waitrose special again, £1.43 (and Asda/Morries have it 3 for £5)
but it looks like you'll have to go to specialists for Ayinger, Schneider, Hofbrau, Paulaner or Hacker-Pschorr - the latter two are a bit surprising as they're part of the Heineken empire, maybe they're keeping them for the ontrade.

Re: Anyone for Italian Beer?
Indeed, and since Weihenstephaner has been mentioned, I'd like to highlight a 'problem' I've got. I've got a bottle of Weihenstephaner Vitus in the fridge. And it SO epic that it feels like it deserves a somewhat special reason to enjoy it. And so it has sat for perhaps two months in the fridge, waiting ...

Perhaps tonight, before Kim and The Donald kick-off?
Would be a shame if it was still in the fridge when you get caught in a nuclear holocaust...

Jolly nice it was too, as good as any weissbier I've had. I'm not an aficionado though, I tend to walk straight past the "lager" shelves heading for the real ale...
In fact the last weissbier I had was probably on the sunny patio of an Austrian mountain refuge after an alpine walk. That was pretty good too, as I remember.
Scott.
