Slow?

I tried accessing the site yesterday and had issues - I actually thought it was down.
Today it is painfully slow again. Posting a new topic took a while.
Who are all these anonymous users?
Can you be sure that they do not have malicious intentions?
Or just eating up all the bandwidth?

It has, indeed, been on-and-off crap for a couple of days now, sometimes not even just very slow but getting the occasional "502 Bad Gateway" error.

What that's due to I dunno but you're right about one thing: right now the bottom of the home page says:

In total there are 997 users online :: 9 registered, 7 hidden and 981 guests (based on users active over the past 5 minutes)

Although the site is pretty snappy at the moment....

Really, 981 guests? I've seen similar stats on other forums. Do we really have that many anonymous guests reading the forum or is it bots; and if bots what are they doing?

Yes, I saw the same thing yesterday evening. More than 1100 of them, and only 10 registered users. Back to normal now, but summat's been going on.

The site's responsiveness is good and fast right now but the home page still as of this moment says:

Even this forum says: Users browsing this forum: mc2fool and 60 guests

Yes, I'll be amazed if it isn't bots, but as to what they're doing it'll take Stooz looking at the site logs to try and figure that....

I'm on a Chromebook and it's working fine for me, I used to find Windows much slower as a rule.

I've been taking a look occasionally and the number of "guests" seems to be consistently high, usually 900+, although it was "only" mid 600s a couple of hours ago. Right now it's:

In total there are 1013 users online :: 16 registered, 9 hidden and 988 guests (based on users active over the past 5 minutes)

However, even though there's always a very high number of guests the site isn't always slow. Right now it's quite snappy, although of course that may be due to the guest count being over the past 5 minutes with very few actually making demands at this particular moment....

It makes it a bit tedious to use.

Yes, it IS slow and has been for a while. TBH, I assumed it was a problem at my end until I noticed this thread.

It's not just me then either. Seemed a bit slow yesterday, perhaps worse this morning which is annoying as I've just got the fibre and now have some 300mbps on Wifi and best part of 1000 on the wire.

Yeah, but that is, as it says, this forum. Go to the home page for the whole site stats and it's:

But, but.... the puzzling thing is do servers wear out then? Why was TLF fine three weeks ago then suddenly new servers are needed?

I take it you've had one of those days when you've got eight apps running satisfactorily ,and then you open a ninth app and it's goodnight Vienna? (Wake me up on Tuesday....)
