Duplicate Posting
Apologies if asked elsewhere.
I have seen a rash of posts double posted. Is there something amiss with the BB software at the moment?

Re: Duplicate Posting
I'd say 'slow to churn a reply' software coupled with a 'lack of patience and observation' leads to double posts.
I use Firefox and on the rare occasions I post I find it pays to observe the browser activity in the top left hand corner of the screen rather than hitting the 'submit' button again. Now to test if my theory is correct.

Agreed, although why the server should take its time to respond isn't known.

That assumes that it actually responds. I've had several "Server Error" messages this morning.
Measures are in hand to improve the situation.

I've had a couple of those and when I do Back One Page my post is still there in edit. Twice when I clicked Post I have been told I can't post twice on the same thread so quickly
On checking, my post had happened the first time, just I didn't get to see it.

Re: Duplicate Posting
Alternatively, open the relevant page of TLF in a new tab/window and, more often than not, your reply will already be there. Then close the original tab/window.

It did correct itself but today the posting delay is back.

Re: Duplicate Posting
I have not changed my browser for years and for the last few weeks, I have been getting long delays before a post is actually posted. It is tome wasting and frustrating. I assume that someone knows what is going wrong because something sure is. Can we please be kept up to date about progress?

Re: Duplicate Posting
We need to change servers, which is in hand, to get more capacity to handle the number of connections to our site. Hopefully it will be soon.

Are you absolutely sure that's the problem? Everything on the boards is (usually) pretty snappy, except posting a new message. It's literally hundreds of times slower than it should be (and used to be).
To me that's not simply a load vs. horsepower problem, but more like some kind of database update issue.

You can be quite confident that we've been asking Stooz about this for some time as well now, and he's quite adamant that it's a server-related issue and is looking into possible solutions.
I agree that the boards are generally snappy in 'read-only' mode, but don't forget that when we're creating posts, it's one of the few times that the servers are being asked to create brand new 'content', and so it should not be a surprise that there may be weaknesses in the current set-up during that particular process.
It's frustrating for me too, but I've generally found that when I make a post and the process seems to hang for a while, then if I just leave it alone for a short period of time then it will eventually sort itself out without the need for further intervention from me.
I've had quite a few hangs in recent weeks, but I've never hit the 'Submit' button again, and I just let it slowly get on with creating my posts, and it generally gets there.
I've not had many, if any, duplicate posts using the above process.
Cheers,

I realise that, but to me it's not the sort of issue that's cured by throwing more CPU at it. Of course Stooz may be aware of this and be looking at it in more depth.
Am I right in thinking that the visible numbering of posts (eg #116234 by swill453 >> February 6th...) is a relatively new feature? To my recollection it is, and also to my recollection the slowness of submitting a new post also might have started around the same time. Was some change of the underlying database made at that time?
I could be on the wrong track completely though.
Scott.

Re: Duplicate Posting
I can assure you that however frustrating you might find it waiting for posts to load, it is far more frustrating having to delete dozens of duplicate posts to keep things tidy. I have taken to submitting posts and then going off to look at another site while it loads.
stooz assures us that he is on the case and as for being kept up to date on progress, he is the only one as far as I know who has any extra knowledge on the matter over and above what any user or moderator knows.
The numbering of posts is indeed a new feature.

The post numbering was introduced in late November 2017, if that assists. Duplicate posts were mentioned a number of times way before then but, as you suggest, the hanging has got worse in recent weeks.

Re: Duplicate Posting
I will stick to the new 'slow' post for updates, but my initial work is now live and seems to make a distinct improvement.
