private message filters
From time to time I get a message saying "1 (2 on one occasion) private message was removed due to p.m. filters". What exactly does this mean? Are they messages to me or from me: am I not entitled to know to whom/from whom and why? Are these automatic filters, in which case what are the criteria, or is this a moderator intervention, in which case what was the reason? It is very disconcerting to think that a message I may have taken ages to compose has not reached its intended recipient but I won't know that and may be cross that they haven't replied, or the other way round.
I have raised this question before (can't remember where) but didn't get any explanation; I think the answer was "no idea" but I really would like to know and hopefully achieve some improvement in this aspect of the feedback so would appreciate a considered reply.

The answer might be here:

I'm not sure but was the suggestion that your PM Inbox might be full, such that new PMs are received but the system therefore deletes the oldest one, to make way for the new.
Is your PM Inbox full?

My reading of the previous thread was that you did get an answer - albeit not entirely definite. It's almost certainly due to one folder or other in your PM box being full.
Can you check and let us know how many PMs you have in the inbox, outbox and sent messages folders?

Re: private message filters
The trouble is, I don't think anyone knows and we have not had reports of this happening to anyone else.
It is not moderator intervention, pretty sure we can't see your PMs, we certainly don't read and attempt to stop/change them.
This message thread has something to say about it: https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... p=15017656
and this: https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=1078045
but it doesn't answer the question other than that you might have set some of your own rules in the dashboard which is stopping it, or the user you are PM'ing has blocked you or something like that?
Or, it's possible whoever you are PM'ing, their inbox is full so cannot accept messages?

Re: private message filters
Maybe you could say here who it is to and see if they can help by looking at their PM box? Only if you want to of course.

Re: private message filters
OMG I knew my memory was getting bad but I had forgotten all about that apart from my original question . So all I have to do is delete messages or otherwise the system will automatically delete some for me to make space and it's not a question of any new messages either way being deleted before being read. I will try to remember that and do some deleting as I go along. Apologies to all for being so hopeless and thanks for your patience. Anno domini is my only excuse. Just scream at me if it happens again.

It might be worth me popping on here that site financial contributors, and moderators, get an increased PM allowance....

Re: private message filters
One thing that this has taught me is how to delete old messages and specify what happens if your inbox is full.
Also that "Mark All" only applies to the page you are on, so you can get rid of a page full of old messages in one go.
And I've just found out what "Topic review" on the right of the "Post a reply" box does.

You did when you were composing your reply, under the Smilies at the right.

It might depend on what you are using but it is straight above this, whilst replying on my mobile, and to the right on the iPad. In blue.

“Expand view” looks helpful though, even though it only shows the page one is on (to see any other pages in the Topic requires opening a new tab or window).
