Where to ask about my US shares

Hi Folks,

What's the best board to ask for selling advice on my latest employee-grant shares that my US-employer has just granted me?

I'll get into more specifics in the actual thread, but right now I'll just say, that I'm after the board here on TLF for S&P500, NASDAQ, US mature tech. stocks knowledge etc.

many thanks
Matt

I'd also perhaps suggest a cross-post at viewforum.php?f=77 (to alert those with International knowledge), as well as maybe at Share Ideas!

Your thread will no doubt throw out a number of questions. One of which may/should relate to Taxes.

The recent conversation about Berkshire Hathaway happened on the Investment Strategies board, which at least is busier.

Yes I saw that but I don't think investing in Berkshire Hathaway is an Investment Strategy per se. Others no doubt will disagree. If you search for Hathaway, you'll see the multitude of boards it has been discussed upon. We've also had International discussions at Share ideas. I do appreciate that no cap fits all but International would be the place I'd like to look for such discussions in the first instance. It would also make the place less quiet!

Hi Folks,

I'm ok with the fees, taxes, and currency conversions etc. I believe the broker and my firm handle all that and I have been doing it all for years.

But........what I wanted to really ask was people's views on short-term forecasts of the US Markets and my (Qualcomm) shares... i.e. I'm not desperate to cash them in ASAP, but I'd like the money back within say 3-4 months. So I wondered where to get the necessary opinions e.g. where to set my sell-limit....

Ah ha! Thanks PD. I post something over in "International & Expat Investors", probably later today or tomorrow. It could be that that's the best board.

Personally, if I definitely wanted the money within a few months and the current value of the shares was acceptable (though of course not ideal, as there's no such thing!), I would just sell now, without faffing around with sell limits, trying to see where markets are going, etc. The reason is simply that all of those risk not getting the money - the market might not go the way one thought it would and the limit price might not be achieved.

If I didn't want it that definitely, the Technical Analysis board might be a good one if you wanted to talk about how the markets might behave in view of how they have behaved in the past; Share Ideas for discussion of how the company has behaved, might behave in the future and how that might affect its share price; and the best I have seen for discussion of broader outside influences on market behaviour (e.g. how the US economy might affect US markets) is Other Investing, though I might have missed something better. International & Expat Investors does not appear to me to be that something better, as its focus appears to be investors who are based abroad rather than investments that are based abroad. Not saying there's any objection to posting questions about Qualcomm there - I've no idea whether there is or isn't, as I don't read that board myself - but a post there will probably escape the attention of quite a few UK-based investors who invest in US and other foreign companies.

How definitely you want the money in the next few months is something I don't know, of course, so all I can do is address both possibilities and leave you to decide which applies to you, as I've done above.

Matt,

I've no idea what you've got, where it is, and etc. However you might want to take a gander at these if you want a USA-ian perspective:

Thanks Dave, I'm perusing this links now.....

EDIT: The bogleheads links just seemed like the usual mix of alarmist forum heads!! Sorry. ;)
