I don't know if this is the right board for this enquiry.

I get frequent "website busy" notices but exclusively on TMF. Is this a general problem or only me?

Thanks
TP2.

It seems at times that we temporarily reach the limit on the number of connections to the web site. It has been looked at in the past. I'm not sure if a solution is feasible.

I've been getting them frequently since a few days before I posted viewtopic.php?f=21&t=14482&p=177630&hilit=busy#p177630 - so for over 4 months now. At the time I posted that, it seemed connected with the large numbers of 'guests' reported online that that thread was about, since as nearly as I could tell the two had started at the same time (though "as nearly as I could tell" was only to within a day or two). However, the numbers of "guests" have since subsided, while the "The website is too busy to show the webpage" messages have not, so it's not a direct connection - though I wonder for instance whether a new version of the phpBB software might have been associated with both.

An oddity that I've noticed is that it appears to happen much more often on some types of action than on others - though I haven't noticed any type of action that it never happens on. But as an example, it seems to happen very roughly 50% of the time on submitting a post, but only very roughly 10% of the time on previewing a post. But both happen often enough that I've developed the habit of typing ctrl-A ctrl-C before clicking either button - I lost a number of posts before I had that habit! :-( That's been enough to reduce it from a problem that at one stage was making using TLF look like a complete waste of my time to a fairly mild annoyance.

In case it helps, I'm most often browsing with Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 8.1, my connection is most often a mobile broadband one, and while accessing other websites occasionally runs into sporadic problems (par for the course on mobile broadband, I think), they are much less frequent than this problem on TLF.

Thanks for pointing these out to me. It's very useful.
I need to upgrade the server, but it's a mine field and risks serious outage, so im not rushing it.
But it's in progress....

You are lucky, Chris. I often get a message on my mobile saying the website is slow to respond, only for the desired page to appear a second or so later. I don't often use my PC these days, unless I want to post some data.

And there I was Terry pulling your leg on another board about your steam-powered equipment when all the time you're hangin' with the kids with your portable gizmos! C.

Chris, I still have a 486 laptop, never been used for 20 years, which I think has W97 on it. I may still be able to find a dial-up modem if I dig around as well. The laptop is well travelled, having been round the world on one occasion, via USA, Japan, China and Hong Kong.

Just for clarity, I'm pretty certain the "The website is too busy to show the webpage" I've mentioned is not a slow-to-respond message that is liable to vanish a bit later: I sometimes see it appear near-instantly, and I've never seen anything more happen after it unless I try the transaction again. So tjh290633 and I are almost certainly talking about different things.

One other bit of technical information that might be useful is that my message has a smaller-print bit identifying it as "HTTP 408/HTTP 409".
