Or Wisteria, always liked that. Nice colour. A local pub has Wisteria growing on one wall. It looks nice. Clematis is another growing plant. Never had any luck with it, always died.

Well how about a topic thread on how to setup and run these spreadsheets?
Would be a good and worthy challenge for those of more experience to teach us newer folk?

My spreadsheets have grown "Like Topsy". Those for individual shares are purely chronological with purchases, sales, dividends received and corporate actions. Columns are too many to list, but the final column is a cash flow, leading to a result for XIRR, and there are also columns giving numbers of shares held and their average cost per share.

One for the portfolio will have the essential details for each share, it's current price and holding value, and the overall total value for that day. I print a copy out for each trading day. You can expand on this to your heart's content.

I worked on databases back in the 1980s, using Prime Infobasic to produce the reports. I dabbled again about the turn of the century, but realized that spreadsheets could do what I wanted more easily. As you say, there is a learning curve. Fundamentally there is little difference between a database and a spreadsheet, both can have more than two dimensions, but that can lead to complications.

I recall using some complicated calculations either with Lotus or the early versions of Excel, which my colleagues in the USA had developed. This was for furnace heat loss calculations. There was the use of macros, and more recently people have used basic.

I think that I am stuck in a time warp from about 2000.
