Meat thermometer advice
We've currently got one that looks like https://www.amazon.co.uk/KitchenCraft-S ... 7NGVD5XR0Z but I am suspecting that it is no longer that accurate so I am looking at a digital one as a Christmas present, to ensure that the Kelly Bronze turkey that I have just ordered is cooked to the right temperature.
Am I correct in my reading that if I want to leave the probe in the meat and see the temperature without opening the oven I need something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/ThermoPro-Ther ... ermometers rather than this https://www.amazon.co.uk/TOPELEK-Kitche ... ermometers ?
I think that's what it is saying when I read the blurb for them.

Thermapen, not cheap but you only have to buy it once

But I can't leave it poked in the meat and read it without opening the oven, can I?

I was given something like the ThermaPro but crushed the cable in the oven door, now I just use it as an additional timer and reverted back to my old KitchenCraft one which has been going for years. I also use a Therma Pen for instant readings which has been going for a long time too, maybe 15 years or so. If I had to replace the KitchenCraft one, it would be the same type.

Yeah, but you still have to get off the sofa and go into the kitchen to read it.
Go wireless: https://www.amazon.co.uk/ThermoPro-TP-0 ... d_sbs_79_1
Or, more flashy, a rechargeable probe bluetoothed to your phone: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07DZB6XZ6/ ... 657325206/

Re: Meat thermometer advice
I am opening the oven door from time to time anyway to baste the turkey as the breast meat seems to benefit and just use a standard thermometer. Have to say I think they are great for turkey cooking.

Re: Meat thermometer advice
I have a thermopen, https://thermapen.co.uk/thermapen-therm ... meter.html great bit of kit, much better than my first digital probe. I still have this https://www.amazon.co.uk/TOPELEK-Kitche ... ermometers I wouldn't recommend it. My thermopen is not the one you leave in the meat.

Re: Meat thermometer advice
I have the cheapo one linked in the first post. To use it you simply take the meat out of the oven and poke it into the joint in several places, there is no need to monitor temperatures continuously. Monitoring just one place with a probe that is itself a conductor of heat could indicate a higher misleading temperature.

I think I'll try the ThermaPro (though I found a cheaper option) and see if I can mange not to crush the cable
I'll probably use the KitchenCraft style one at the same time and see how their readings compare.
Cheers

We've ordered a Kelly Bronze and they give some pretty precise cooking instructions, eg
If the temperature of the meat after standing for 30 mins is:
60°C - It's Pink
65°C - It's Perfect
70°C - It's Overcooked
And
A KellyBronze will cook quicker because of the intramuscular fat that is not present in a standard bird. Remove the meat from the oven as soon as the needle hits 60°C and leave to stand for at least 30 mins
The total cooking time for the Extra Small that we've ordered is only 1 hour, which stunned me when I read it so not much basting required.

Aha, while ever other day of the year my main meal is in the evening, on Xmas day it is and always has been Xmas Lunch. I feel a poll coming on.

Interesting that you say Xmas Lunch, I/we always call the mid day meal lunch, yet so many people say "dinner!" We always eat lunch at mid day and have a light dinner in the evening. What about a poll then?

At school if you had the in house catered option at noon you had school dinners. If you bought sandwiches from home they were in your lunch box.
Weddings have breakfast at lunchtime.
