Burns Night Supper

#196347

Postby Skotch » January 25th, 2019, 8:21 am

So, what if anything are people planning to eat to celebrate Burns Night? The traditional Haggis, tatties and mashed swede with gravy (whisky)? Or, as its a Friday night, a chippy tea? For me and Mrs S its Haggis, chips and mushy peas washed down with a pint of Deuchars

I had forgotten - if I'm in Reading I'll check out the 'spoons menu, they often do a special haggis dish for the night (well, week normally)
I may be too busy concentrating on necking Dark Star 'Hophead' while I still can, as Dark Star will shortly be owned by Asahi of Japan...

Double deep-fried pizza, with supersize chips and deep-fried Mars bars to follow. ;)

we host a BM every year. Our nuance is red cabbage.

haggis and black "pudding" sausage rolls for pre supper nibbles.

cranachan for desert. :-)

Same for Mrs H and me. I'm going to break my dry January and have a tot of Glenlivet with it.

Do you have any suggestions for how we (Sassenachs) should address the haggis? (Apart from with a knife.)

Would Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face, Great Chieftain o' the Puddin-race be appropriate?

regards

Howard

Howard. That's about right. I have been to plenty Burn's Suppers over the years and really I have no particular interest nowadays. Besides, it reminds me of the SNP.

Fair haggis you awoke my fishy urge, on
Salmond and the plutocratic Sturgeon.
The former will be visiting M’Lud;
The latter thinks Westminster is a dud
For scuppering her mad designs on power
In Edinburgh – cold and damp and dour.

So haggis – steaming merrily afore,
Your slanderous thoughts a bit against the law.
My knife stretched forth to score your Scottish skin;
You're thinking fishy synonyms for sin...
