Mrs. May eats mouldy jam

That is not quite what she said, she said that she "scrapes top mould off and eats the jam or jelly underneath". Nothing wrong in that, we make all our own jams and jellies and have resorted to scraping mould off more than once.

If she makes a habit of it, she might need to review whether she's making it wrong. Jam is a preserve: it should be naturally resistant to mould!

I neither make nor eat jam, but I occasionally make chutney and I'd consider a mouldy batch to be a serious failing.

Mould on jam? Scrape it off, no problem. However, that applies to home made jam, not sure I would do that with shop bought jam. No idea why not, I can't explain that one away
