Not if it is a ripe or nearly ripe pineapple, no. I (attempt) to raise ripe pineapples here on my palatial estate around 60 km north of N’Orleans Loosiana. They are easy to root from the cut tops of store-bought pineapples and/or “pups” from the plants that produced fruit. They like full sun and lots of moisture. The only problem is protecting the plants from a freeze and the fruit from “pests”. I have a hobby greenhouse for the plants in the winter. From the time the pup or top is planted & rooted it take about 2 years until the plant blooms & produces fruit. I was interested in growing ripe pineapples after we visited the Dole Plantation in Hawaii about 20 years ago and tasted ripe pineapple.

This year I had 2 plants bloom and come into fruit. I harvested the first one last weekend before it was fully ripe (no green on the fruit but not the deeper yellow-orange color & sweet odor that attracts pests like wasps, coons & illegal aliens). I cut off the top yesterday (I’ll plant it tomorrow when the rain stops) and attempted to pull it apart as shown in the video. The result was crushing the ripe fruit and releasing lots of juice into my hand, running down my arm and dripping from my elbow onto the floor. Not good! The wife was not pleased, no.

Queen Victoria's gardeners provided her with a fresh pineapple every day apparently. Must have kept them busy. Plenty of horse manure needed but there was probably no shortage of that.
