I thought the claim that packets of nuts had to have labelling "may contain nuts" had been dismissed as an urban myth.

Not so, or at least as applied to Peanut Butter.

Another leading UK brand of peanut butter only warns that it has been produced in a factory that processes other forms of nut.

Of course peanuts are not nuts but legumes so perhaps the peanut butter made in a factory that makes other nut butters may well possibly contain nuts.

Maybe! But, neither are almonds, pistachios, cashews, brazils, pinenuts, or walnuts which are either fruit or drupes.

I eat a lot of 'nuts' which probably explains a lot :)

Well, I like all of 'em, regardless of the taxonomy.

But isn't the point of those labels something about allergies? And AIUI a peanut allergy is a nut allergy.

Not exactly...

Peanut allergy is a type of food allergy to peanuts. It is different from tree nut allergies.

People with confirmed peanut allergy may have cross-reactivity to tree nut, soy, and other legumes, such as peas and lentils and lupinus. The cause of cross-reactivity results from similarity in the structures of storage proteins between the food sources. Allergenic proteins are grouped by protein families: cupins, prolamins, profilin and others. Peanuts and soybeans have proteins in the cupin, prolamin, and profilin families, while lentils contain cupin proteins.] Reviews of human clinical trials report that 6–40% of people with a confirmed peanut allergy will have allergic symptoms when challenged with tree nuts or legumes.
