I was idly looking to replace my much-loved but sadly damaged steamer (hob-based, similar to these), and I find most available steamers nowadays are electric jobbies, about which I'm sceptical.
Having contemplated steamers, my eye wandered to other kitchen appliances, most of which I can see sitting idle in my kitchen once their novelty has worn off. But one category intrigues me: multi-cookers such as these. The claim is that they offer a whole range of functions from slow cooker to pressure cooker, taking in functions like steamer on the way, and with settings that claim to cook particular recipes.
Anyone used these? Do they really work miracles, or even do a decent job with regular recipes? I guess the acid test - how often do you use them, compared to the regular oven and hob and microwave?

Re: Multi Cookers
Apparently these are very good and have a loyal following. Not quite the same though.

Re: Multi Cookers
Thanks for the replies. Sounds like noone here has direct experience.
Indeed. Two litres sounds quite limiting: it would do an ample single meal, but not if you want to keep some ingredients separated from others as they cook. As in the steamer, where I typically boil pasta in the water and steam something green above it. And it highlights portability - for the boat or caravan - which isn't a consideration for me.
Now that's a fine tale of the rise of something that does look like the ones I was looking at. Interesting that his venture came from his migrant experience: those cookers were popular in China when he was young, and he missed them when he moved to Canada.

Best thing about it is the sauté function.
Thanks!
Much as I enjoy a sauté spud, that sounds rather like damning with faint praise. But the mere fact that you use it is positive compared to many kitchen gadgets.
