Sushi in the supermarket
A local Sainsburys has just opened a pop-up sushi bar right in the middle of the store. To be precise, right in the middle of the meat aisle.
Is that a bit odd? Does it pass food regulations? (I presume so?)
OK, I'll admit that eating raw fish really isn't my thing, so I can avoid that temptation easily enough. But I gather that sushi first-timers do have a well-documented (and well-understood) tendency to vomit. Do I want to go back to that store again? I'm not so sure.

Re: Sushi in the supermarket
Raw fish? How about gravad lax on rye bread?
Isn't sushi other things too besides raw fish?
These interesting threads derail very fast...OT...
One Friday years ago a chappie from GS phoned the office and asked would you guys like to have sushi for lunch. Boxes of high-end sushi meeting Goldman Sachs standards were delivered. There was so much left over I rescued a big box of the stuff and took it home. I got many brownie points at home as my then wife loves the stuff. It was really good I have to admit.

Now I remember, I saw one in my local too, looked very snazzy but it was where those delicatessen counters are, caught my eye for a few seconds even though I was galloping towards the beer isles.

Certainly does look snazzy, I've got to give you that! And catching on fast across the south-east, I understand. But would surely work better at the periphery of the store, as you describe, rather than in the centre - for various reasons, of which the ready availability of a water supply would be one.
Oh well, they didn't seem to be doing very much business at midday. Mind you, we country bumpkins (west Wiltshire) are a bit of a long shot, marketing-wise. If Sushi Gourmet (or is it Gourmet Sushi?) can ever get the wurzels buying bento boxes, it'll definitely be a sign of changing demographic times.

Still a far cry from us here near the grim colliery pits...and we have the posh sushi too! Plumb in the middle of the corned beef and pease pudding shelves!

Re: Sushi in the supermarket
Sushi refers to food served with the vinegared rice which may or may not be raw fish.
Sashimi is raw fish.
I had a free sample yesterday in Sainsburys...very nice.

I'd never buy it from a UK supermarket; it's so far removed from what it should be, it's like serving 12hr old Big-Macs and pretending they're 'genuine American gourmet burgers'.

Re: Sushi in the supermarket
In the house I worked in in Saudi, we had our own (70 years old) sushi master, and that was about all he did and what great tasting, superbly presented sushi did he make. He used everything from blue fin tuna (maguro) to beluga caviar but the one I enjoyed most was the California roll made with Alaska King crab! When my wife was out visiting me, he would make me a sushi take out for her, she has never forgotten it.
In another division of the company, I was on the design team for the Japanese restaurant. The Japanese chef, who earned more than me, had 10 Fillipino cooks under him including a sashimi specialist, I loved all that stuff, but one thing that stands out for me was one of the staff meals that they cooked for themselves, simply deep fried crispy jumbo prawn heads straight from The Arabian Gulf, in season the prawns were still alive when delivered.
Oh! Well. It's beans on toast for us nowadays! Joking of course.

Re: Sushi in the supermarket
In the last 30 or so years, Japanese food, especially sushi has gone from mostly unavailable here in S.E. Loosiana to sushi chefs in many of the local supermarkets. Some of the smaller stores even have pre-made stuff delivered in the morning for sale during the day. Most of it isn’t bad, no, its terrible!!!
I was introduced to sashimi, raw fish & rice, while staying at an in near Mount Fuji in 1966 - for breakfast!
C.J.V. - usually go for a sushi lunch most every week, us

I'd be interested to see that documented anywhere.
I've introduced a number of people to sushi/sashimi at restaurants in London, Zug and Lutzern and not one of them was in the slightest bit queasy, after eating the food.
