Re: Sprouts anyone?
Interesting.
I wonder if CK has a similar distaste for bitter beers, even thought the bitterness caused by hops is not sprout-bitterness but isohumulone (a.k.a. 3,4-Dihydroxy-5-[3-methylbut- 2-enyl]-2-[3-methyl-1-oxobutyl]-4-[4- methyl-1-oxopent-3-enyl]-1- cyclopent-2-enone)
Over Xmas, CK could try - purely in the spirit of scientific study - a range of beers known to be markedly bitter (Oakham Ales Citra for example, although LFools are invited to suggest others) and report back on which ones hit the upper limit of toleration.

Re: Sprouts anyone?
I had them last night for supper. I trimmed them up and cut them in half, lengthwise. I then steamed them for 4 ½ or 4 minutes in a bamboo steamer using a wok. The water was dumped from the wok, dried, a knob of butter added and was heated until it started to brown. I then dumped in the steamed sprouts along with some Cajun seasoning, stir fried very briefly and served, similar to what I do with cauliflower. Came out quite good DW said, not overcooked no.
C.J.V. - might try growing them again next year, me

So this is a clear 63% in favour of Brussels.
I'm surprised the Guardian aren't leading on this story.
Happy Christmas to you all!

Re: Sprouts anyone?
I love sprouts and eat a lot of them. When they are available I have them most days. My wife and I get through a couple of kilo per week without noticeable effects. We do eat a lot of veg anyway.
Sometimes they can taste earthy which can be less pleasant and sometimes they can taste sulphurous but it isn't that often once they have been frosted. This year we haven't had a bad batch.
I sometimes fancy them up for Christmas with chestnuts and bacon but day to day they are fine boiled.

Re: Sprouts anyone?
Anybody tried them roasted?
Something we watched today was about the new "sweeter" breeds of sprouts and for the man in the street tasting they cheated and roasted them. which meant that the outside was caramelised.
But it seemed an interesting idea which we may try on Boxing day. (Tomorrow being cauliflower cheese.)

Grated parmesan and melted butter is how our sprouts will be served after being steamed.

I've just been given a gift for those who dislike sprouts.... a Sprout-A-Pult. Just like a catapult, but designed to fire sprouts into the far distance.
No use to me, I like sprouts
