Card Security Risk?

#15705

Postby quelquod » December 16th, 2016, 1:37 pm

My wife tried to purchase some goods online yesterday from a company we've used before. At checkout, and after entering her card details and address she was redirected to a third-party site (forgotten the name of course) which claimed to help secure cards by a password mechanism and requested name, address and card details. She declined (naturally?) and the sale didn't complete.
Anyone know what this is about? Is it authorised by the card issuers or an independent company? Do the card companies accept responsibility for any fraud through using it?

They only ask for certain letters from your online password.

But before you get there, you may have to confirm the billing address, card no. name etc.

Yes, I know. After the financial crisis, I wouldn't trust them with a wet tea bag, but we don't have much choice. Just keep records etc.

Not necessarily. Recently, Santander "Verified by Visa" has not asked for characters from my password. Instead, it has asked for my credit card number, expiry date and my dob. The transactions have gone through, and I have not had any fraud on my account,

That was for large debit card transactions, notably credits to NS&I. I have wondered what banks and brokers are doing about the reported percentage charges on debit card transactions. Perhaps they are treated differently to small purchases.
