"City lobby groups have started talking to banks and investors about reducing stock market trading hours in a radical move aimed at helping working parents. "

The plans, which are at the early discussion stage, are aimed at ending the era of testosterone-fuelled trading rooms by encouraging more women not to drop out of senior City jobs due to childcare issues.

According to Financial News, which first reported the talks, the options being discussed include opening equity markets an hour later at 9am and closing an hour earlier at 3.30pm.

The NYSE is open from 9:30 a.n. EST to 4:00 p.m. EST, so in theory one could argue this idea would merely bring the number of hours that the LSE is open in line with the NYSE.

However under the current situation there is a 2 hour period when both the UK and US markets are both open at the same time, since the NYSE opens at 2:30 GMT. Under the proposed change there would be only one hour when both exchanges are open. Moreover the changeover to and from Summer Time might mean that there is no overlap at all at those times.

So in my view it would be better to open the LSE at, say 9:30 a.m. GMT and keep the current closing time the same.

Doesn't the Nikkei have an hour off for lunch?
