HYPTUSS: which versions of Windows and Excel

Older versions of HYPTUSS (11-4) worked for me on XP and Excel 2000, but I'm struggling with version 11-53*. Has anybody else managed this successfully or am I now obsolete?

I've no ability to test XP or Excel 2000, but it would help enormously if you told us what you were doing when you got this error.

Do you get the error with a fresh download of 11.53 before you add any shares?

Yes it was a fresh download - I did the minimum amount of fiddling: saved a copy of the spreadsheet, clicked 'Get Yahoo Prices', then got the error message.

I should mention that 'Single Chart', 'Add Share', and 'Delete Share' all work, so the macro is working.

I have, but it will take a while to get the system running again. It's an old XP laptop with a broken socket for the charger, so I'll have to charge its battery in another laptop before I can run it - I'll get back to you in an hour or so.

In the mean time, I can confirm that for a fresh download of 11.53 there are no errors for 'Get Yahoo Prices' with Windows 7 / Excel 2000.

Thanks for that confirmation. I would like to say that if HYPTUSS does not work with my configuration, I wouldn't expect any development to be done to make it work. I would accept that my old machine doesn't cope with it - but of course I would like to check that the errors aren't unrelated, hence my question.

Tried it and got in, but battery was flat before I had a chance to note down the code, will get back to you after recharging...

While we wait for the battery to recharge, it's probably worth noting that the XP machine is running the initial release of Office 2000 with no updates installed while the (working) Office 2000 on the Win7 machine has been updated to Office 2000 SP3.

Updating Office 2000 is problematic. While the service packs for O2k are still available from Microsoft, a prerequisite is that Service Release 1 is first installed (O2KSR1aDL.EXE). This is no longer available from Microsoft, I had to search for a 3rd-party site that still held a copy (do so at your own risk).

From Bree's last post, I reckon we will find that you need the 2000 update to SP3 and that the OS is probably not the issue.

Just logged on and seen this thread, so apologies for being a bit late to the party.

There's been an issue for some weeks with the XP functionality, and I don't think we're likely to get it back. I saw this issue just after Christmas on my XP box, and it was also reported here in this thread by smokey01 -

As discussed in that thread, I spent some time trying to get it to work with no luck, and came to the conclusion that it's something to do with the XP HTTP/HTTPS calls from Excel, and I suspect we'd have to get into some dirty butchering of DLL's if we thought it was a worthwhile exercise.

Unfortunately, I don't think it is, especially given the really small number of posters that seem to still be using XP. I should say that I was one of them until shortly after Christmas, and this episode alone was enough for me to finally migrate myself from my old XP workhorse to my new shiny I5 DeskMini (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rock-Desk-110- ... B01GSWJ3JM) running first Windows 7, and then a swift skip into Windows 10.

I hope you understand that there comes a period where it's uneconomical to spend a huge amount of time trying to patch things up and keep the XP support going, but I think it's time that we concentrated our efforts on maintaining the more mainstream user-base.

Battery has a full charge now. While I was waiting I tested the base-level install of Excel 2000 9.0.2720 on Windows 7. It works without error.

Back to XP - signed in with the password, I now get:

"Compile error: Can't find project or library"

It stops at 'CommandButton1, Click, Ln133, Col 27'. The line...
share_price = Left(dict(ticker), InStr(1, dict(ticker), "|") - 1)
...has the word 'Left' highlighted.

Yes, of course, I agree completely, and I made the point earlier that I wouldn't want to trigger any development work for this issue. My question was always about confirming the issue really was related to the old systems rather than something I'd done wrong.

Like many others, I'm grateful for the effort that's been put in to provide this tool, and I have found it very useful. Maybe I too should ditch XP!

You will download O2KSR1aDL.EXE. Run this to extract the setup files needed to install Office 2000 Service Release 1. With SR-1 installed you can then install the service packs which are still available to download from Microsoft, SP3 was the latest, it's here...
