Fundamentals - data sources

#136497

Postby Bhoddhisatva » May 3rd, 2018, 8:55 am

Not a newbie to investment but relatively new here and a search of the boards/posts didn't show up a list of good data sources for fundamentals.

I want UK, EU, US and Canadian data. I use:-

1. Morningstar (free version available direct with extra payable options and also free via Sippdeal aka AJ Bell You Invest if you use them)
2. Digitallook
3. Rarely now, iii.co.uk for a quick watchlist (as I'd built one there anyway long ago)

What do others use?

What do you recommend?

What is best for extracting data digitally in CSV for use in Excel locally?

Has this been recently covered here on Lemonfool somewhere? (And if so is it me or the search tool failing!?)

Apart from those you list, I find ADVFN useful and Trustnet convenient for watchlists, which can be cut and pasted into Notepad and then from there into a spreadsheet.

I'm only interested in UK listed shares, plus a few OEICs, so haven't looked further afield.

The Bloomberg app and the ADVFN app are useful if you are on a mobile.

Hi Bhoddi,

As well as the dedicated website mentioned by kiloran, there is also the Financial Software - Discussion board where similar matters are often discussed:

PS I see you've gained an "h" and lost a "t" since the old days http://my.fool.com/profile/bhoddisattva/info.aspx. ;)

Hi PD .. yes but it's all subjective and phonetic as to how to spell it! (Guess I should have tried to make it the same!)

Crumbs ... 1999 ... didn't think that profile was still available! 19 years!!!

You may have spotted this Topic has been moved to here (Financial Software - Discussion) and it might be well worth reading some of the prior threads.

PD

O/T As for your TMF USA Profile, you can always amend it once you've got hold of a functioning password etc, not that there's anything untoward (although some continue to criticise Genesis). It won't change the old versions held on the Wayback Machine though. ;)

When you registered for the Fool you created a profile that was valid on both the .uk and .com sites. Only the .uk site had been closed for signing in, you can still sign in (and post, if you ask nicely) on the .com site.

I was just looking for the right place to have another moan about Digitallook, and thought this topic might be an appropriate place.

Their reliability seems to have been getting progressively worse. Take this example, from their post-close report on the FTSE-100 last night, compared with their pre-open report this morning:

'17 May, 2018 17:39 [post-close report]
'London close: FTSE finishes at record high
The FTSE 100 closed at 7,779.49, a new record close'
https://uk.webfg.com/news/market-report ... 00562.html

18 May, 2018 07:36 [pre-open report]
'London pre-open: Stocks to edge lower after record closing high
The FTSE 100 was called to open four points lower at 7,730, after closing up 0.7% at 7,787.97 on Thursday'
https://uk.webfg.com/news/market-report ... 01447.html

One out of three index levels reported there is correct. ...just about sums them up...

- For Index closes, intra-day highs/lows, plus closing levels of individual shares I 'go to source': londonstockexchange.com
- These days I only use digitallook for general market news, and to get the pre-open [c7.40am] which indicates where futures suggest the index will open, but now I'm wondering if there is a more reliable source for that simple piece of data.

Incorrect data is not limited to Digital Look. Yahoo manage to have the wrong prices against certain stocks.

Yesterday, I downloaded historic stock prices for AAS, SST and SOI from Yahoo & did some work in Excel, drawing graphs, calculating drawdowns etc.

Then after looking at the graphs and referring back to Yahoo website data, I realize that Yahoo have the wrong prices for at least 2 of the 3 stocks. Many of the AAS end of quotes are near £12 this year, but this is way out of line with other data sources, which show it nowhere near that. I should know, as it's my biggest holding.

Does anyone know where I can download historic stock prices, without the errors that Yahoo have ? I prefer free data, or something for a very modest fee.
Accuracy is a must, as incorrect data is worse than useless.

I can't vouch for the accuracy (probably no site is guaranteed to be 100%), but here's an alternative source of historic prices

Webfg is just Digitallook having rebranded itself into a more mobile-friendly website. For example open this page http://www.digitallook.com/dlmedia/performance_tables then click the top-left 'Digital Look' home-page looking button at the top-left of the page, and it goes straight to webfg.com

This site was already mentioned as conveying innacurate LSE data earlier in this topic.

ps. These days I only take my closing data from https://www.londonstockexchange.com/home/homepage.htm and on-pages from there. It's not pretty nor that modern, but if it gets data routinely incorrect, then gawd 'elp us.

Yes, I'm aware of the DigitalLook/Webfg shennanigans. I was responding to the specific request for non-Yahoo historical prices. I haven't checked if the daily errors on DL/Webfg also affect the historical prices.
