Jehovah’s Witnesses property empire

Of the two things I've known about JW until today was 1) people knocking on our front door at inconvenient times for me, and 2) a building named Kingdom Hall fronting a stretch of North London's North Circular Road which whenever I drove past looked like it was unoccupied.

So with some amazement I now find that there is more to it than meets the eye:

When I worked for HMRC I went along to a presentation on JWs and the slide show of their properties world wide was eye opening to say the least. For an organisation that was only founded in the 1870s they've acquired a massive portfolio which must be worth trillions. No wonder Ron L Hubbard (I think) said that the best way of becoming seriously rich was to found a religion.
