Car industry reacts with alarm (well they would, wouldn’t they)? My first thought: this pre-empts more announcements of them reducing capacity here, and the unspoken brexit-bonus headlines: people who voted to lose their jobs, lose their jobs. Now there’s a new scapegoat. But that’s not really plausible: much more likely he wants the industry to stay. His announcement, and the industry reaction, are preparing for some big bungs of taxpayer money to bribe them to stay here and invest in re-tooling to produce electric cars.

There is effectively a creeping ban on existing ICE cars. I didn't mention my other car, a 2003 Peugeot 1600cc, which still goes well, but has a road tax of £240/year. This is so extortionate that the next time it needs a new exhaust or battery, I will scrap it, and buy a cheaper vehicle, but whose manufacture will leave a large environmental footprint.

Or my son's Golf, immaculate and goes well at 140,000 miles, except for the fact VW hobbles it because it needs a new DPF costing a lot more than the car is worth. It will soon be scrapped, and replaced by a cheaper vehicle, but whose manufacture will leave a large environmental.....you know the rest.

Errrrm, isn't that because DPFs are expensive to make (platinum and suchlike), and often a proper fiddle to fit? And not really a creeping conspiracy against the motorist?

We could of course argue that those damned European regulators who brought in the Euro 5 exhaust regulations in 2009 should have kept their noses out of other people's lung problems and let the carbon particulates rip, but I suspect we'd be in a small minority. ;)

I can better that!

I have a very small rock that I use as a paperweight. I looked it up and I, too, verified it as being 4.5 billion years old. That was seven years ago, though, so it will now be 4500 000 007 years old.

That deserves a proper celebration. Let me know when its birthday is, and I'll send a card. :)

I have a Hotpoint tumble dryer from 1988. It's needed a few spare parts (hose, belt, motor brushes, capacitor, door catch) but still going strong

My father has a blue metal shoe horn, he acquired it in Hong Kong while in the army, just coming back from duty in Korea in 1952/3.

I'd like to say it stopped a bullet and saved his life, it didn't but he still uses it every day to put on his shoes.

I still have the Barbour coat I bought in 1984, I still wear it on cold wet days in winter. It needs reproofing and a little bit of stitching but apart from that is still perfectly serviceable.

Brushes and a capacitor? Is the "capacitor" a suppressor?

I thought tumble driers usually had induction motors (no brushes); I'm not sure if they all do though. A failed capacitor is often the cause of the motor not running.

I may have misremembered (it has been 32 years). Definitely replaced the motor starting capacitor recently. The brushes might have been for a different appliance.

As I started this thread, I feel I should specify that rocks and objects that have no moving parts should be excluded. Otherwise I shall submit a ring I inherited made from 24ct gold created whenever the last supernova occurred.

I have an Ormonde hair dryer from the '50s that I inherited from my mother. It works perfectly , although , unfortunately , I don't have the hair to dry.

Just to be mischievous, would you class that apocryphal "grandfather's axe" axe as having no moving parts?
