Freezer Finds

#452000

Postby Rhyd6 » October 21st, 2021, 1:56 pm

Decided to clear out lasrge chest freezer for the first time in many a long year. There lurking at the bottom was a pack of sausages with a use by date of 24/7/2013!! OH reckons they'll be fine for the dog but I'm not too sure. Has anyone risked either eating similar finds themselves or feeding them to dog, or should I leave them in the freezer in case all food supplies run out by Christmas - which according to the more sensational headlines is bound to happen ;)

I dunno, you're a long time dead. Give it a decent burial. ;)

Our second freezer in the garage is full of unlabelled plastic pots of vaguely yellow stuff, which according to my wife might be pumpkin soup, or custard, or chicken casserole, or baked apple pulp, or maybe macaroni cheese? We're thinking of getting it all carbon dated to determine its age, but it's already survived a couple of ice ages, not to mention a couple of partial defrosts when we've accidentally left the door half-open. (Whoops. ) Thanks for the prod, I've been meaning to dump it since 2017....

I found a couple of condoms in a pack saying Use By [sometime in 1987]. Will they be OK?

Surely Use By dates are not applicable when something is frozen? That's the principle of various biological projects like seed banks.

Old frozen sausages won't kill you, or the dog.
What might have happened is that the fats have slowly oxidised, giving an unpleasant rancid flavour/smell. So you probably wouldn't find them tasty. But it's been at near -20 degrees so nothing is growing in it. I'd defrost one, gives it a sniff, and offer it to the dog if you don't fancy it much.

Whether the dogs are ok with this is their choice I reckon!

2013 is positively fresh compared to some of our freezer and cupboard contents !

If they are BBE Sep 2020, you might be ok.
If they are BCE Sep 2020, they are probably not worth the risk.

Chest freezers, arrgh. Our first freezer was a chest, c1977, great lumpen thing, in the hall at the foot of the stairs... we had a set of baskets made for it, lift out the top layer to reach the bottom layer, but it was still a struggle to find things.

We now have a total of three uprights. OH keeps order by running a book in which she notes what's in which freezer, in which shelf.
This totally spoils the 'what's this?' adventure of defrost time.
Which of course is even more spoilt by one of the freezers being a frost-free.

The nearest we came to consuming a mammoth was a bottle of the wife's home-brewed beer, vintage 1992, that we drank in 2019 https://www.lemonfool.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=18694.
That went pretty well.

I'd give a miss to the prawns.

Are you talking about the sausages or the condoms?

If you've any neighbours that you dislike it'd be a great opportunity to see whether the urban legend of hammering frozen sausages into their lawn actually works.

Apparently, as the sossidges thaw they attract every dog in the neighbourhood, and they will collectively dig up the lawn in a very satisfactory manner!

Just think of the ensuing court case headlines: "Lawyer prosecuted for hammering frozen sausages into lawn"

Wouldn't work with square sausage though would it? You'd be forlorn with four lorne, for a lawn!

I can imagine the police investigating a Cumberland ring

I think The Sun would run it as "Barrister banged up for backyard banger banging!"

The question you should ask(but should know the answer) not if they are ok, but if what you put them on is in full working order.

Of course it isn't - they'd never fit! It has to be in at most intermediate order to put them on, before growing to full working order. :P

Which reminds me of the German butcher who decided he could make sausages out of seabirds.

Sadly, he took a tern for the wurst …

You're too gullible. Didn't you notice the prankster was puffin that piece on April 1st?
