They seem to have locked the regular entrance and expect us to go around the back, stepping carefully past the bins and mind you don't trip on the cat.

Why did a drink always taste nicer when there was an illicit lock in? Now that pubs can remain open forever I miss the dark nights when you could shut the curtains and just have one measly 40 watt bulb lighting the bar as everyone spoke in whispers - just in case. Just in case what I'm not too sure because our village bobby was always there for the lock in Mustn't forget Tommy Spanners who was alwys having a coup de grace, we never figured out exactly what he meant by that but the request always appeared around his sixth or seventh pint.

Sounds AWFUL

Each to his own of course, and my very best to you and your nostalgic lock-ins, but personally it sounds dreadful. Stuck in the middle of nowhere, inside some ghastly hovel with plenty of “character” no doubt; consisting of dark oppressive beams, hideous horse-brasses surrounding a filthy old fireplace dating back to King Xerxes, drinking pint after pint of some local noisome ale with an unpleasant whiff of sewage about it, and worst of all, having to converse with a bunch of drunk old characterful locals, who are sticking their noses into your business.

Give me a nice, clean, sparkling, noisy, ultra-trendy cocktail bar full of thirty-somethings, serving up an impeccably made whisky sour by a delightful cocktail waitress.

'Srewth Simsqu your idea of a country pub sounds like something Hogarth would have dreamt up. My tipple at the time was a Moscow Mule and the landylady had a penchant for Harvey Wallbangers. The landlord was a whisky man and always had several decent malts to hand. I also liked a really good armagnac - Janneau was my favourite, in fact it still is. Characters, yes there were plenty of those still are I suppose but we tend to call them friends and neighbours.
