An aerial picture of the dam at Loch Laggan in Scotland, after the monsoon we've had here over the weekend, while you southerners have been basking in a heatwave.

Yeah, I met a chap called Noah in the local DIY shed on Friday morning getting stuff for a 'big project' he said.

Seeing the forecast, I had lined up a series of small indoor jobs for the weekend. Nothing too demanding. 'Pottering' I believe is the phrase. I like to potter when the weather is rank rotten outside.

The missus went cross country running.

The video clip on the twitter feed shows just how strong the flow from the day's outlets was...pretty scary !

We can only dream of such healthy levels in our reservoirs!

Though to be fair, it's a lot better than it was in the first half of the year. A wet July and mixed August kept the levels little-changed over a period that could so easily have seen rapid decline with heavy consumption from both man and nature.

Live in the Thames Water area and see images like that all the time - just with different coloured water ;)

There's healthy and there's a bit too healthy for your own good!

Having to open a dam flat chat like that can be a bit of a surprise for anyone downstream; especially if it was a dam put up for flood protection and they've decided that it can't hold back any longer.

Worked on a project once where the front end team had capped a dam level display at 100% (because you can't have more than 100% right?!) when it's traditional to peg that 100 to normal or nomimal capacity (as in it would be considered "full" from a potable source perspective)
- not that uncommon for them to approach 200% before you have to "let go"
Fortunately we noticed before the customer got a nasty surprise - encouraging a quick fix by training the same ultrasonic sensor in use at the guy in question https://www.digikey.co.uk/en/products/detail/senix-corporation/TSPC-25P-485/10249918
- I imagine it's a bit like being in a room with a giant bat

Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2023 -

A picture of a mysterious and other-worldly horseshoe crab has earned Laurent Ballesta the title of Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2023.

The golden marine arthropod is seen hugging the bottom muds in waters off Pangatalan Island, in the Philippines -

Nice day to climb Ben Vorlich yesterday. The mist over Loch Earn took all day to clear.

Image

Behind is Ben Lawers, among others.

Could also clearly see Ben Nevis about 50 miles away.

The day after the storm (Babet didn't really bother us like it did in Aberdeenshire/Angus. Saturday was reshuffled to spend doing a few indoor bits n bobs as the weather did it's thang outside)

Sunday, however, was a lovely day. Loads of folk out and about enjoying the nice weather - and the sea was still pretty impressive

And over on the other beach, someone was brave enough to take a dip (there were surfers too, further out  )

It looked nice inland too

I was just going through my archive to find a particular photo, of the Jungfrau, see below.

I was shocked to see it was taken on a walking holiday ten years ago, where does the time go ??!! Next year I will have been retired for twenty years, having retired at 52.

There's been recent discussion here on FIRE strategies, I would say retire early if you can, my medical condition precludes me from doing this kind of stuff now.......

That brings back some nice memories. Back in the 80's I camped in Grindelwald below the north face of the Eiger and walked the ridge on the opposite side of the valley to the Eiger. And on another occasion I skied at Kleine Scheidegg below the Jungfrau. I was very much a beginner skier at the time, and spent more time picking myself up from a tumble than actually skiing. One of the locals commented to my friends that he admired my persistence

Eiger on the left, Jungfrau (I think) on the right

I'm no cunning linguist, but that's how I read it.

What a strange name for a mountain.
