Torschlusspanik or “gate closing panic” is the anxiety-inducing awareness that as time goes on, life’s opportunities just keep getting fewer and fewer and there’s no way to know which ones you should be taking before they close forever.

That perfectly describes how I feel, having recently turned 56 :cry:

Young chap like you needs to get on with it. Just four more years to free prescriptions and the Old Farts' Railcard[1].

Congratulations ! I think..

Four years to formal retirement ! I will be going in two years unless they make me an offer before then (which would be ideal)
On the down side , I have had more involvement with the NHS this year than I have had in the previous thirty...
Currently on a whole blinkin' month of antibiotics (well, 28 days) - 'if that doesn't fix you, you'll have to come in for scans/tests/humiliation'
Luckily I can drink with them. First thing I checked...

I think the antibiotics <> booze thing is a bit of a myth (well, at least exaggerated)
Possibly going back to the armed forces, when it was a good excuse to keep the lads off the beer for a week or two
It does say, explicitly, on the NHS website;
'You can drink alcohol while taking [this particular antibiotic]'
Obviously this is not always the case so one should always check with the GP
There are some that react badly with alcohol eg Flagyl;
"Drinking alcohol while using Flagyl might cause unpleasant side effects, such as feeling sick (nausea), being sick (vomiting), stomach pain, hot flushes, very fast or uneven heartbeat (palpitations) and headache."

ISTR that the older types of antibiotics would sometimes disagree with booze - but more to the point, that alcohol could reduce their effectiveness. But that newer 'families' of these drugs are generally less likely to do that. With exceptions, naturally. ;)

The point there (armed forces, 1940s) was that the original antibiotic - penicillin - was (is) excreted in the urine. So taking a diuretic (alcohol) would reduce your blood levels. Indeed, AIUI they would collect and re-purify penicillin from the urine of the servicemen, because it was so expensive to produce. Nowadays, there’s no particular reason to refrain from alcohol, as penicillin’s so cheap and you can just take a higher/more frequent doses. Not sensible of course, as it’ll only be washed down the drain and ultimately contribute to antibiotic resistance. Flagyl (metronidazole) on the other hand does not “mix well” with alcohol (inhibits the detoxification process at a particularly inopportune point). All in all, it’s best just to accept that avoidance of alcohol is a good thing when taking antibiotics.

Yes, the penicillin thing rings a bell - I had a course for tonsillitis way back (mid 80s?) and the doctor said I could drink with them but may 'piss them out of my system too quickly' (his words...)
i'm meeting half way by having 14 days on the wagon in the middle of a 28 day course..
My NHS mate tells me they use something similar to Flagyl (presumably not Flagyl itself) to treat alcoholism- Antabuse I think

First thing I checked...

"Hey Doc - am I OK drinking on these really strong antibiotics?"

"I'm not sure it really matters any more...."

"Yay ! - aint modern medicine wonderful !!"

"Erm, please sit back down....."

Cheers,
