Thanks for the update. Surely they can't close the bridge. It takes you to a superb beach and coastal walk, enjoyed by lots of families, and, more importantly, by my granddaughters! I had better contribute.

Augmented reality is really cool -

With that said, I think we might need some clearer instructions on the whole 'VR' side of things for a while yet -

I was fortunate enough to get a fantastic Christmas present this year - a photographic trip to Iceland. To top it all there was a fantastic show of the Aurora Borealis at the end of the week - this image has now been viewed over 100,000 times on Flickr :o

oh and it was perishingly cold too!

A photo I took in the summer near Assérac. This was one of many 'sea salt makers' in the area. Along the road were many mussel farms as well.
Fascinating place.

Looks lovely, and I bet those beach huts are cheaper than the ones in Southwold

My thought was, that river must have some lovely swim-spots. But at this time of year they'll be bracing. Do you have any good heating system - like the wide, shallow pools upstream from here that catch the sun?

The Findhorn, and its neighbour the Spey are fed from mountain streams, which at this time of the year are still experiencing snow melt, so any swimming would be bracing. And you would also suffer the ire of Salmon anglers as you disturb their highly sought after (and expensive) beats. My son was complaining this weekend of a family of Otters that were present in his favourite pool on the Spey. Well - a fisherman has always got to have some excuse for catching nothing.

Did you really forget? Or was it some subconscious Good Taste that posted the good photos and omitted the one with the really hideous junk in the middle?

Don't answer that. I'd hate to press you into admitting to good taste, no matter how involuntary.

You're welcome.

As we walked on the old railway line and yesterday through the forest, I realised how the nations transport, health and eco issues could be largely solved in one hit - and in about a decade.

Y'see the thing you noticed about those particular sections was that there was little in the way of a breeze - in any direction - although your could hear it blowing in the upper reaches of the trees. For me at least, being buffeted by the prevailing gales is the most off putting thing about cycling.

So we build cycle paths of a similar width to the old railway line and tree line them (several trees and bushes deep). Given the light weight that's going to be on them, they don't even need to be surfaced with tarmac (although that would be better) as hardcore would probably be alright.

I reckon I could easily cycle the 5 miles of the old railway line in less than 20 minutes and and so could folk with electric assisted bikes. If I compare that to driving, then parking etc, there's really not that much of a difference. The width of the path is similar to one side of a single carriageway road, so plenty of room for different speeds of bikes.

Now you'd still get wet if it rained, but as Billy Connolly once said, there's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. Buy decent clothing and you'll be fine.

So there you go. Cycle paths to improve the nation's health. Cycle paths to improve the nation's traffic issues. And planting loads of trees, bushes and shrubs to improve the environment.

* I realise that this probably isn't a new idea, but sometimes you have to actually be experiencing the actual conditions to 'get it'.

Sustrans converts a lot of old railway lines to cycle / foot paths. They probably don't have the budget for serious earthworks such as making cuttings and embankments as comprise railway lines

We have nine miles of old railway line running through our village - all tarmacadamed which I walk and cycle on frequently. Horses are also permitted. But the bugbear of the cyclists are the roots from the trees on either side of the path which create corrugations across the path. And cycling can be a teeth rattling experience, not to mention the enforced rear end vigorous massage. Could I suggest (recycled) plastic trees on either side of your paths? :)
