As we walked on the old railway line and yesterday through the forest, I realised how the nations transport, health and eco issues could be largely solved in one hit - and in about a decade.

Y'see the thing you noticed about those particular sections was that there was little in the way of a breeze - in any direction - although your could hear it blowing in the upper reaches of the trees. For me at least, being buffeted by the prevailing gales is the most off putting thing about cycling.

So we build cycle paths of a similar width to the old railway line and tree line them (several trees and bushes deep). Given the light weight that's going to be on them, they don't even need to be surfaced with tarmac (although that would be better) as hardcore would probably be alright.

I reckon I could easily cycle the 5 miles of the old railway line in less than 20 minutes and and so could folk with electric assisted bikes. If I compare that to driving, then parking etc, there's really not that much of a difference. The width of the path is similar to one side of a single carriageway road, so plenty of room for different speeds of bikes.

Now you'd still get wet if it rained, but as Billy Connolly once said, there's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. Buy decent clothing and you'll be fine.

So there you go. Cycle paths to improve the nation's health. Cycle paths to improve the nation's traffic issues. And planting loads of trees, bushes and shrubs to improve the environment.

* I realise that this probably isn't a new idea, but sometimes you have to actually be experiencing the actual conditions to 'get it'.
