Whoa, stop right there. The wife and I have two phone lines with three powered bases each, so I'll see you with six for openers, and that's just the landline. The shed alone has four cordless DIY/gardening gizmos permanently charging, although admittedly, our mobiles usually charge off the nearest computer, or maybe the car's 12v socket. We're running out of power points all over the house, and if I install any more four-way adaptors the insurance company is going to start getting antsy.

Not to mention the thousand and one things that are on permanent plugged-in standby, because I can't be @rsed to unplug them and they're "only" pulling a few watts each. (I try to tell myself that the heat they generate comes off my general household heating bill. ) All credit, then, to my fancy rowing machine, which (I'm told) doesn't pull any mains charge at all when it's not being used. It certainly doesn't get warm. If one manufacturer can do that, why can't all of them?

Most of them do these days. Any modern charger I've measured uses no current when not actually charging.

Modern devices all use an absolute smidgeon on standby. EU rules (yes, I know), say no more than 3w. But in fact, many are a few mW. With a mA meter I couldn't even measure the current my monitors take on standby. But they must be using something cos there's a tiny led on

So all these dozens of new devices, are still using less than a single old style filament light bulb.

Rest easy.



PS. And even brand new-build houses don't have enough sockets.

We've installed a couple of these 240V sockets with integrated USB outlets above the kitchen worktops, replacing the existing ones that supply the kettle and toaster, and use these for most of our USB-charging needs. The example below incorporates 3.1A USB outlets, although some still use the lower-power 2.1A USB outlets -

Indeed they were. But when they started Wilton their backing just fell apart, and it suddenly became all too clear what underlay all their problems. They were stuck in a warp, totally be-weft, and they needed to get a grippa themselves.

I fear this thread has unravelled.

So for something completely different that struck me with its beauty, the changes in the river this week. Especially the times on Monday-Wednesday when it was low enough after falling back from the weekend's rain for the water to be crystal-clear but still fairly vigorous, and the sun shone sparkling on it. Lovely.

Shed? Luxury! I still dream of a shed.

My first-ever house, a two-up two-down terraced in Birmingham, is currently on sale for six times a junior teacher's salary - compared with five times a junior teacher's salary when we bought it 47 years ago. And they say we boomers have robbed a generation.

Mind you, it isn't the same house any more. It's got an inside lav these days, and central heating and double glazing as well. Totally ruined it, they have. The penniless spartan chic look was de rigueur when we were penniless.

But the view from Google Earth strongly suggests that the original shed is still there in the garden. The previous owner had got hold of an old glazed office cubicle from his place of work, some time around 1970, and he had put it up in the garden, finishing it off with a coat of white paint and bodged-up flat roof made of corrugated plastic. And somehow that thing has survived half a century of wind and rain. It must be the most eco-positive blot on the landscape in the West Midlands. I shouldn't wonder if it's got a preservation order on it.
