I've no idea how the England squad will cope at Murrayfield today. Will they suffer from heatstroke?

Oh the continental newspapers - how will they survive? Single glazing, no central heating**** and no mixer taps.
*** often when a continental thinks about CH he sees not a flat or house as a unit with its own boiler but instead a large county-wide cental heating unit where the radiator pipes radiate the heat---in layman's terms.

Re: The Beast from the East....
I have over 40 worn, uneven stone steps from the road up to my door.
This is my fifth winter here, and I've yet to have to navigate those steps in snow and ice. I wonder if I might experience that delight now? Probably not.

You're right. Mixer taps are the ultimate solution to the misery of winter freeze-ups.

I presume that'll be because social/communal rented housing is so much more common on the continent? Whereas we benighted Brits persist in the illusion that a citizen's semi-detached home is his castle, and that he ought to be paying his own fuel bills rather than subsidising his profligate neighbours who turn their heating up to 11 all the time? What a bunch of damn lefties those Europeans are.

When i worked in NYC I lived in a residential tower block, and had flats below, above and either side of me. My neighbours had their heat set so high that I didn't need to swich on my heating the entire winter, and winters there are worse than ours (although shorter).
A lack of insulation can be your friend, as long as you are willing to be just a little cooler than your neighbours.

The beast has arrived. Not windy at all. Lost the satellite signal, TV channels all garbled. I fear my scotia beading delivery won't happen today.

scotia beading - had to look that up....
Bright and sunny in east Berkshire, but very cold (well, for the Thames valley, which is one of the warmest areas in the UK)
Hoping for snow further west so I don't have to go to Reading tomorrow, although worried I might get stuck there if I do go and we get a blizzard...

Don't go in any rough pubs, and watch out for collapsing buildings.

Re: The Beast from the East....
Woke up to a thin covering of snow, here in Essex but it was a mainly blue sky with less wind than yesterday.
Since then we have had a a period of dark cloud and additional snow and wind, and boy is it cold out there when the wind doth blow.
Currently sunny again and most of the snow seems to be melting.

Re: The Beast from the East....
A few snow flurries here in West Wilts, but no sign of anything serious till Thursday. That's when the Shiver from the South is set to arrive, and all bets are off. Instead of Bordeaux and ripe cheeses, the French are sending us a nice cold blanket this time, with just a smattering of frozen frogs' legs and a gallic hint that gratuities are not included on the bill.
Tell you one thing, though, the birds in the garden are going through the peanuts and the fat balls like they're going out of fashion. We've got blackbirds trying to hang onto the bird feeders like blue-tits, so I imagine that all the berries are gone from the bushes now? It certainly seems as though nature is gearing up for a bad spell.
Meanwhile, I must have watched that TV infographic a dozen times about how the warm-air downdraught from the Arctic has somehow reversed the rotation of the jet stream and plunged us all into a new ice age, but I can't seem to hear anybody explaining exactly how it happens. Still, life's too short, I suppose. I've got the gritting salt and the shovels ready, and I'm off to the supermarket in a minute to stock up on a week's rural groceries and maybe a seasonal bottle of Aquavit.

85-90 in Florida, experiencing a heatwave for this time of year. The good news is that humidity will be better this weekend and getting a cold front, so it will be in the 70's and very pleasant.
I will just get my coat..........can't its too hot for that.
