Tragedy
of the first magbitude - our pub has had to close due to fire!!!! Seems there was something wrong with the fusebox and whoosh up it went. Kitchen destroyed and the rest of the rooms suffered smoke and water damage. Landlord is rather peeved as he'd just had the place decorated. Ah well, we were going to make inroads into our sloe gin and wine so now is a good time. Luckily we have a big kitchen come living space with the conservatory linked so we've plenty of room for the Quiz to-morrow night, but there will be a lot of sad people about as there isn't another pub within walking distance.

Re: Tragedy
English-owned holiday homes in Wales were particularly prone to spontaneous combustion in the 1980s...
Hope there's not to much damage to your local.
We've lost a few to fire, but usually when they've been shut for a while and they 'mysteriously' burst into flames - and are then replaced with expensive housing.
(Clearly not the case here as it's a working boozer!)

Re: Tragedy
Notwithstanding the insurance angle to which my fellow Fool alludes, pubs are notoriously dodgy re electrics because each new lessee wants various new features that involve adding to the existing circuitry. This results ultimately in installations on the brink of safety. It doesn't take much of a cowboy to push it over the limit. Chris

Re: Tragedy
I've seen some horrendous lash-ups in pubs: cables and junction boxes everywhere, all looking like they are grossly overloaded, and probably installed by Mr Faraday himself in the 1830s

Yes, I remember a joke from that time, "Come home to a real fire - buy a holiday home in Wales!"

Not the 9'O'Clock News IIRC? Not everything hit the mark, but a greater percentage than Monty Python. Whatever became of Gerald? Probably down and out in London nowadays, ostracised from Society for his outspoken thoughts.

Ah yes AC - Meibion Glyndwr what a happy little bunch of pyromaniacs they were. Mind you talk to them today and they will admit that they'd got home rule for Wales completely wrong. As one of them said to me not so long ago "we'd have made a bigger cats a@se of it than the buggers who are in charge now and they're flaming useless".
On a happier note the landlord has had a visit from his insurance company and it looks as though things will be moving forward quickly re the repairs so hopefully he won't be closed for too long.
