I was a mile from home on my dog walk today ( I know it's a mile since I've measured it for my running route) I thought it would be interesting to see how many steps that would be since I had my phone with me and it was recording my steps. Exactly 1760 as it happens.

Re: Coincidence?
Or the app on your phone measured the distance using GPS, and divided a mile by a yard to get the answer. It probably thought that calculation was likely to be more accurate than any step counting procedure.

Re: Coincidence?
The modern mile is 1000 (mille) double paces of a Roman legionary. So it should be 2000 steps. A one yard pace is huge John. Are you 7' tall?
