A slight aside, but latching on to Rhyd6's comment:

I was wondering whether this was a vicar preaching in Welsh using the hypnotic and now vanished 'hwyl' intonation - something I heard as a child in Flinshire - the same county as Nercwys.

There seems to be a reluctance to sing to the tune as composed. They all want to add some embellishments, which are not needed.

Sopranos who lead the National Anthem at international matches are particularly guilty.
