Re: Lemon Soul
I've always meant to ask but what are your ...............s about? Sticky keyboard or a lack of a functioning comma?
total illiteracy
back on topic.......(ooops sorry) If one wants to discuss Pensions, there is a board for this. Health, retirement, etc, the same. What I did notice with Beerpigs Board at TMF, regulars automatically discussed their issues and concerns there first and were only re-directed if one couldn't answer the question. So there were many more topics to discuss. Also here, one appears to be far more polite! That's not an accusation, just saying. I don't post enough to know, as one person was suggesting that here the mods are stricter? Ive been with TMF USA since 1999 but mostly on the financial boards. Yes the Rec system and post of the day are certainly a bonus.
Surely though, its the posters here who make the board what it is, plus we are all getting older and as PD noticed, I can't even write proper like anymore.................................................................................................................................................best. bran.

Well, this board is stated to be "A virtual pub for off topic, light hearted pub related banter and discussion. No trainers" in the board list. So anything that isn't light hearted pub related banter and discussion is off-topic... But then again, anything that is light hearted pub related banter and discussion is on-topic if it's off-topic, and off-topic if it's on-topic! ;-)

You over analyse
"A virtual pub for sui generis, light hearted pub related banter and discussion. No trainers" ???

If I arrive in trainers, you really don't want me to remove them.

If it remains a virtual pub it's OK
Anyway, nobody over 35 should wear trainers unless they are actually exercising.
I may allow casual 'trainers' like Adidas Gazelles, as long as they are blue or black.
This be the law.

I loved my Reeboks, but as with denim jackets, they have to be put aside when one reaches a certain age.
I don't wear blue jeans these days either - strictly black 501s
I'm 53 next month- you are all invited to my party at Corrour station. Free bar.
It's a place I must visit before I die. Probably just before I die, if I get caught in a summer blizzard , or I'm midged to death

I'd love to Branmin but Businesses are wising up to bulletin boards and whereas TMF scraped through on being a financial website, the Lemon Fool got caught in the filter.
It's interesting that the FIFA World Cup Fantasy site also got caught in the filter but on this occasion I picked up the phone to IT and said 'please sort it. This is business critical for morale and stuff'.' And they did! The difference there of course, is that one of our Directors loves playing Fantasy Football.
Hey ho.

Hear hear.
This is a pub.
Any subject, within reason, should be able to be discussed here.
If the thread goes over 20 posts, I understand the Moderators saying, 'Guys, there's a better Board for this discussion, please move over there.'
Otherwise, please, it's a pub. We should be able to discuss what has happened today, without being asked to move elsewhere.
Thanks,
HYD

When did the Motley fool boards start? Got a feeling it was 'mid' 90s.
Late '98 or thereabouts I think. The problem here, if one exists, is the dearth of drunken posts. This being one of them. st my humour when Fool died.
I was on tmf.com in c.1995, when I was living in Asia. Then the .co.uk version from '96 onwards in the UK.
IMO It can be a little earnest here, not much latitude for eccentrics or the marvellously simply batty, though a great resource OF COURSE. But I think it might be that we're still worried about spammers etc., and it's a small group, and we stick close to recent 'survivorship'/haven't been able to let our hair down quite yet. Also it's drilled in that this is a shoe-string op and voluntary run, so 'vulnerable or else' [ie behave].

At the recent Lemon Social I recall (half a gallon in, so perhaps not reliably) Pink Dalek and I disagreeing on the primary role of the site. IIRC PD felt it was information and help whereas I saw it more as entertainment and amusement.
I know what you mean about the earnestness, which I might also see as rigidity. Although if anything I thought TMF was worse for that. I always thought that the "help" boards there in particular there were dominated by people who thought that every problem has only one solution. Those who took a more alternative approach would be ganged up on, with tacit support from the TMF Mods. I don't notice that here.
It is perhaps not a coincidence that some of the worst culprits of that have not made the transition. No names, natch.

I wear trainers mostly for cycling. They're more robust than most sandals. And in winter, wearing socks helps, so I have something to tuck the trousers into.
When I arrive at my destination, I don't usually turn up carrying alternative footwear. Should I not be able to wear them while doing whatever it is I've come to do?

I'm unsure if you've read the whole thread but the first posts at TMF USA were on 1 April 1997. David and Tom Gardner becoming discussion board Fools as follows:
http://my.fool.com/profile/TMFSpiffyPop/info.aspx Fool Since: April 2 1997
http://my.fool.com/profile/TMFTomGardner/info.aspx Fool Since: April 3 1997
Maybe your on TMF .com relates to reading content over there. As previously, the copyright notice at the foot over there shows:
© 1995 - 2018 The Motley Fool. and Wikipedia says Fool was founded in July 1993.
If you recall your username back in the day (I know it wasn't DiamondEcho), you can still check your registration date by finding that profile of yours.

No, absolutely not. Change into a nice pair of Church's brogues.
And sandals are for the under-tens,unless you are a woman.

There was of course another view of that, that (for instance) posts based on US law were positively unhelpful for someone asking about a legal problem in this country. But we're all supposed to have left problems at TMF behind us when we came here - so I'll leave it at noting that such problems did have more than one side.

I was thinking more of the "Debt" board in particular. At least that was where I saw a resident clique.
But as you say, it's a new game here and a better one as far as I am concerned.

Re: Lemon Soul
This is of course simply a standalone chat room or rooms. TMF as has been said was a commercial site with a lot of back up, although I think that the mods were more forgiving on there. I sometimes almost give up because of the stricter moderating on TLF.
Still, we must be grateful for TLF and I would certainly miss it because I learn more I think than I am able to give on these Boards but they are kind of prim and proper.

All seems pretty Jurassic now, back in '95/6 the internet was in it's infancy, and we were mostly accessing 'Soc.etc.etc' newsgroups via unix terminals. The first time I saw a website with html [at that time] it was something else. Naturally it was a porn channel, which seemed to dominate the early web.

Interesting, I found the moderating on the old place to be a bit of a PITA, especially when a thread was to be considered closed, but you hadn't noticed and found that your beautifully crafted and erudite post, that had been given lots of Recs, was cut. Or even worse, the post you were answering was cut and you went with it.
I don't think that I've been moded here, but it used to seem to happen at least once a month at the old place.

Re: Lemon Soul
My experience is just the opposite Slarti. I was seldom refereed as out of order on TMF (and then of course we were told and that allowed us to put our case sometimes with success). Here (I do not blame the mods because they are volunteers) but things are sometimes taken out of context and the mod is judge, jury and executioner with little or know redress. I almost never report a post; maybe I should do so more often.
Or maybe I am just getting grumpy.
